A Woman Called Fancy, is Frank Yerby's first novel to have a female protagonist. Set in Augusta, Georgia, the novel covers the period from 1880 to 1894 and shows the rise of the heroine, a beautiful South Carolina woman, from poverty to prominence among Augusta's artistocrats. Fancy fled an incestuous marriage arranged by a drunken father. She had little education and no money. But with the priceless gifts of courage, honour and high personal integrity, Fancy won out against all odds and wrenched from life a position of respect and security.

Frank Garvin Yerby (September 5, 1916 – November 29, 1991) was an American writer, best known for his 1946 historical novel The Foxes of Harrow. Yerby was born in Augusta, Georgia, on September 5, 1916, the second of four children of Rufus Garvin Yerby (1886–1961) and Wilhelmina Ethel Yerby (née Smythe) (1888–1960). Rufus, a hotel doorman, was part African-American, part Seminole; Wilhelmina ("Willie") was Scots-Irish.
