The son of a conservative East Prussian army officer, he was born in Munich, Germany and died in Berzona, Ticino, Switzerland. Martin Andersch, his brother, was also a writer. His school master was Joseph Gebhard Himmler, the father of Heinrich Himmler. He wrote about this in The Father of a Murderer.

Only 1 left in stock (more on the way). The very pensive and subtly constructed book delivers thought provoking views on freedom, escape, resistance from multiple perspectives and seems like an autobiographical act of katharsis for the universal guilty conscience of those who failed to stop the NSDAP before it was too late, such as Andersch himself.

Alfred Andersch: Sansibar oder Der letzte Grund (Flight to Afar). I am not too keen on either of the titles. The English is pretty meaningless, except that the main characters are trying to flee Nazi Germany but not too far away, only over the water to Sweden. Andersch tells us a first-class story of five people with their own reasons for doing what they are doing and cleverly, the Nazis remain as The Others, very remote, with only the brief appearance of a motor patrol boat. The fear of them for all, of course, is very strong.

A quietly holding book- for a marginal market at best. Categories of Interest: Select All. Biography & Memoir.

ALFRED ANDERSCH (1914-1980), was one of the foremost novelists of post-War Germany. Like Heinrich Boll and Gunter Grass, Andersch was one of the most persuasive and constructive critics of the Federal Republic's fledgling democracy.

Born in 1914, Alfred Andersch attended a private Munich boys' school, which was in fact run by the father of Heinrich Himmler, as depicted in his last book The Father of a Murderer‹. In 1933 Alfred Andersch spent six months in Dachau concentration camp for his activities as a Communist youth leader. After deserting the Wehrmacht army in 1944, he spent over a year as a prisoner of war in America.

What is the difference between plane flight and space flight? space flight you go to outer space regualr flight flight you stay around earth. The shuttle was a masterpiece of engineering. A boy dreaming of Huckleberry Finn, a mortally ill Pastor, a seaman, a disillusioned Communist, a young Jewish girl running for her life - meet in a half-derelict Baltic fishing village and are drawn into a daring plan of escape from Nazi Germany. At the center of their plan is a small statue in the Pastor's church, a statue which is to be confiscated because it is politically dangerous, a statue so beautiful and powerful it welds together the stangely assorted band of refugees.

Prefer to read it in German, but purchased this copy for a friend, who is a non German speaker. Flight to Afar
misses point of original title.

Alfred Andersch was among the authors that started a literary revolution of sorts with his new stream of consciousness writing style. The very pensive and subtly constructed book delivers thought provoking views on freedom, escape, resistance from multiple perspectives and seems like an autobiographical act of katharsis for the universal guilty conscience of those who failed to stop the NSDAP before it was too late, such as Andersch himself.
