Following a shattering and exceedingly public personal tragedy, Antonia Weston moved to the sleepy town of Amberwood seeking peace and anonymity. As she struggles to rebuild her life, Antonia finds herself increasingly fascinated by the macabre history surrounding the town. The abandoned watermill, Twygrist, with its brooding darkness, and the now-vanished Latchkill Asylum—where, a hundred years ago, the unfortunate inmates suffered gruesome fates—both pique her interest. Eventually, however, Antonia's obsession with the linked histories of Twygrist and Latchkill alerts someone from her own past, a person who knows the town’s brooding secrets and who is prepared to use that knowledge in the most horrifying manner.

I gave this story four stars because the flawless melding of past and present just wasn't in the beginning of this book! There were a few viewpoints from different points in time and it was very confusing in the beginning of the book - as far as a third of the way into the story. Very unlike Rayne's usually seamless melding of past and "present".

I was repulsed by the rape and incest scenes because by their nature they are disturbing. However, the rape, incest, and homosexuality are integral to the plot. I'd recommend that if these topics are ones you find unsettling, not to read this book and pick up Rayne's " Property of a Lady" instead.
I havent finished reading it yet, but find I keep sneaking back to it during the day for another page or 2. Its a good light read, easy to follow, but has a twist every chapter. You think you know whats going on, then something happens. I'm hoping this author has more like this
Great read as most of Sarah Rayne books are. This book has many turns that leave you in suspense for more! Just when you figure out "who done it" you find you are dead wrong. If you like Sarah Rayne and unusual mysteries, you will love this book!
Sarah Rayne is one of my favorite authors! I couldn't put this book down; read it while on vacation.
I would love it but it was way explicit, more than expected, still.... a tour de force.
Great shape - Rayne's work is always enjoyable reading.
I have to say I was really, really disappointed in this book. I read "Ghost Song", "House of the Lost" and "Roots of Evil" and was completely captivated. They were all "can't put them down" books with a high level of suspense and an unexpected twist. "Spider Light" has been a boring plot with so many sub-plots that you truly lose your train of thought. It has turned out to be one of those, well, I spent money on it so I need to finish it books. I am now about 3/4 of the way through and am not sure though that I can finish it. It seems to be totally different from her other books.
I enjoyed it
