You'll feel like you're watching an episode of the TV series with this novelization by Eric Alter, part of a trend of TV show novelizations in the '70s and '80s (I've got books from "Happy Days," "Dallas" and "The Partridge Family," too). The author stays absolutely true to the characters and the themes of the show in this one, which seems to be the only novel done on "The Dukes." Bo, Luke, Daisy and Uncle Jesse show their values, Boss Hogg and his deputies are trying to thwart them at every turn, and the General Lee is the General Lee, the fastest thing around in its orange blaze of glory. In the story, Bo and Luke meet a famous racecar driver who's impressed with their driving. Jesse, meanwhile, learns that he owes 10 years in back taxes on the farm -- to the tune of $10,000 -- but it's Boss Hogg behind that, of course (see what I mean by familiar themes?). To pay the taxes, the boys hatch the idea to head down to Florida with a finely tuned General to try to win the big one: the Daytona 500. Boss gets wind of it and he, Rosco and Cletus follow them down there to mess things up the best they can.

The publish date for this book is 1982, and the timing is interesting, because the book does not feature Enos, but it does throw in Coy and Vance at the end (and the two other cousins are pictured on the back cover). Coy and Vance appeared in Season 5, beginning in fall 1982, and Enos left in November 1980 for his own short-lived spinoff show, then returned in September 1982. There's an inset in the book that features black-and-white promo photos of the cast, including Coy and Vance in a couple, and even Enos in one.

If you're a "Dukes" fan, this is a sweet little story you'll enjoy, and if you're a "Dukes" collector, you've gotta have this one. A rarity.
