Canadian author Mazo de la Roche wrote 16 novels about Jalna, the Ontario estate of the Whiteoak family. This is the first book, but it actually starts in the middle, with three generations living. Subsequent books deal with both past and future events; this one is set in the 1920s. This is my first read by Mazo de la Roche, and is the beginning book in a series, I will definitely continue on with it. I liked reading about Philip and Adeline, how they met, what they experienced along the way, up to bringing them to Canada and building their beautiful home. The book sails along smoothly, I kept waiting for something bad to happen, that didn't happen in this book.

1929. From Canadian author de la Roche, comes the popular Jalna saga. The series in total consists of 16 volumes and made her a popular novelist. The series covers 100 years of the wealthy Whiteoak family history, and it is partly based on de la Roche's own experiences. The central characters are Adeline Whiteoak, his grandson Eden and his half-brother Renny, his wife Alayne with a number of spouses, ex-spouses, and spouses-to-be. The fourth in the series, Whiteoaks of Jalna begins: From the turnstile where the tickets were taken, a passage covered by striped red and white awning led to the hall of the Coliseum. The cement floor of this passage was wet from many muddy footprints, and an icy draft raced through it with a speed greater than that of the swift horses within. There were but a few stragglers entering now, and among these was eighteen-year-old Finch Whiteoak. His raincoat and soft felt hat were dripping; even the smooth skin on his thin cheeks was shining with moisture.

This book is one in a series of 16 books. It is about the Whiteoak family and their Canadian home called Jalna. The family is unique, and the series takes you through several generations. You grow to know and love the family with all its ups and downs... very close to real life for so many. My mother read the series when she was young and brought me to it. I read the series when I was in my twenties and am reading it again in my 70's. It grows on you. Just be sure you read the books in order as it is so much fun to see the members of the family grow up, have successes and failures, marry and divorce, travel, and have adventures on the Jalna property... you rejoice at their successes, and you mourn with the family when members die. I definitely recommend this book and the others in the series. Good wholesome reading.

Subsequent books deal with both past and future events; this one is set in the 1920s. It is one of the best books I have ever read (first time 40 years ago). At the center is Grandmother, one hundred years old and as alert as anyone in the family. The description is beautiful (if you've seen Ontario, you'll be able to picture it all) but doesn't get in the way of the plot. With marriages, affairs, divorces and birthdays from the oldest to the youngest, there is never a dull moment. Many of these books are out of print in the U.S. You may need to get a used copy or buy one from amazon canada, which I've just done with the second book. I can't get enough of the Whiteoaks.

I just happened on to this series of books.....looked up the order they were in chronologically and began at the beginning. The cultural life and history of nineteenth century Canada is interesting.....and the Whiteoak's family saga keeps me coming back for more. I am about halfway through the series. When I just want to read for pleasure, I'll check in with the Whiteoaks.

1964: I first came to know the Whiteoak family and I have never lost my fascination with them. I still have my worn and tattered paperbacks from when I first read them in high school. I was thrilled to find the series available for Kindle! If you like romantic historical fiction, I highly recommend this entire series. Take them in the order they were written, however, or you'll be unhappy with yourself.

The stories are good.
The writing is good as well.
The transcription (or however the text is transferred to kindle/nook) is shoddy. The typists or "keyboardists" need a lot more practice. Proofreaders too.

Excellent copy. Like new. Great price

This is the first book of 26 that Mazo de la Roche wrote about Jalna and I have read everyone of them and wish there were more. I could not put any of them down.
I didn't know what the book would be like, good or dull. It is an older series. I read the first book in the series, and it was interesting. I have now downloaded the next two books to continue the saga. I am looking forward to reading all the books in the series.
