I’m ready for tea, said Hagar. The tea was brought and once again I presided over the teacups. I was feeling almost normal now; the comfort I drew from these two astonished and delighted me. They believed in me; they refused to treat me as a hysterical subject; and that was wonderful

Kirkland Revels loomed high above the wild and eerie Yorkshire moors like a brooding stone fortress. To some there was an atmosphere of evil about the place, but to innocent young bride Catherine Rockwell, the mansion seemed magnificently romantic. She did not know then of the terrible secrets imprisoned behind its massive walls.

This was my first Holt book

This was my first Holt book. I really enjoyed it. It was a lot like Mary Stewart's books which I've read mostly all so I was hoping to find another author similar to her. I really liked Gabriel (and Friday) and I wished he had a bigger part.

I was looking at a picture of a church which I recognised as that of Kirkland Moorside; there were the bride and groom, the latter recognisable as Sir Matthew. It was astonishing how she had managed to convey a likeness with those tiny stitches. She was undoubtedly an artist.

Love Victoria Holt's novels. I have been reading them since the 1960's and believe I have all of her paperbacks from then to 1999.

When Catherine came home from school in France, she found her home as gloomy and repressive as ever. She longed for a chance to escape from it, and when she met Gabriel, she did just that. They were married and she went to live with him in Kirkland Revels. Almost as soon as the arrived, Gabriel died. People said it was suicide, but Catherine thought otherwise. After she found out she was with child, strange things started happening, and she realized that someone was trying to kill her - and her child!

I love gothic novels, and this one is one of the best! If you have never read one before, or if you have read a hundred, this is the book for you!

Perfect for any lover of gothic romance novels, which I have been for the last 25 years. Victoria Holt is the best, and this was expertly done. English manor house + unexplained deaths + strong heroine + creepy happenings = a great read, as usual! I did guess the "bad guy" early on, but probably because I am so familiar with the formula; plus I wanted just a little more from the romantic ending, but still, this one won't disappoint.

I have read a number of Virginia Holt novels, and thought they were wonderful and read alot more gothic romance/suspense novels. I am surprised to have missed this one. This was a WONDERFUL read, nice strong heroine (who fits her time in manner & speech) and gothic castles and dark diabolical people. Murder, & mystery. And truly has you on the edge of the seat at the end. I often changed my idea of whom was the devious planner, right up till the end. Wonderful, wonderful read.
a girl marries. she soon frinds herself a widow with a baby on the way. the heir to a fortune. some one is trying to put her in a nut house but her lover saves her. my favorite quote from the book " he lend over me and looked at the baby and said there's only one thing wrong he's not mine, that was his praposil for marrage" the 8th victoria holt book i read.
