The Pilgrim's Progress was a book for men and women; and it was aimed to teach the great truths of the gospel. Hence while most of it is written in a simple style, – as all books should be written, – it contains much that a child cannot understand; not often in the story, but in the conversations and discussions between the different persons. Some of these conversations are in reality short sermons on doctrines and teachings which Bunyan believed to be of great importance. John Bunyan was born in 1628 at Elstow, a small village near Bedford, which is in the heart of England.

The Pilgrim's Progress retains enormous appeal for its imaginative and lyrical prose, wonderful descriptions of landscape and travel, simple yet elegant style and also for the delightful touches of humor. Many of the names of places are phrases taken from the Bible, which went on to become common idioms. Written in the period between 1677-84 by writer/preacher John Bunyan whose own life was as eventful, fraught with suffering and misfortunes, The Pilgrim's Progress was written during one of his terms of imprisonment for violating religious laws. The book received enormous acclaim and went on to become one of the most popular religious texts in Christianity.

I don't think I ever imagined I would read A Pilgim's Progress to a class and have them absolutely gripped. The children are constantly asking if we can read some more. The larger edition with colour pictures is my favoured version for reading in class, but this book is so packed with vivid language and moral challenges that the children almost forget about illustrations. In fact, when I showed the illustration of Apollyon, they were disappointed, in that they felt the illustrator hadn't quite got the horns in the right place! This shows the degree of engagement they had with the text. Certainly the children have developed a much better understanding of metaphor, and they constantly have ideas for what each character and place represents. It is also lending an opportunity to discover stories from the Bible, and to talk about them in the same vivid way as this book retells A Pilgrim's Progress. At recent Student Led Conferences, many of the children wanted to talk about this book with their parents! My first introduction to A Pilgrim's Progress was Beth, in 'Little Women'. I have always wondered, and wanted to know more about it. This book has been a joy to read and share, and has helped me approach the orginal with much more enthusiasm!
This is a classic piece of literature that every Christian should read and understand. While it was written long ago, the implications for today are still just as significant.
I loved this book!
I ordered this and received it well within the stated time. The book is in a very good condition. I am using it with an elderly person's group even though it is written for children
great read - easy on the eyes print.
The vocabulary is quite advanced for recommended age group especially considering it's an abridged version.
I had been looking for a "children's" edition of Pilgrim's Progress, and this one is excellent! The pictures are somewhat updated and clear, readily identifiable by children. This was exactly what I was looking for.
