Tess was seventeen and her evil step father sold her to winner of a card fame. Lord Tweed thought he was going to win but lost to Morgan Hamilton. He took her to his plantation they married first,.The slaves played a big part of the story would they make them free ? The other owners did not agree to that.Tess had a hard time trusting Morgan. He was faithful to her but got close to betraying her with a married woman. She was determined to have Morgan. Everything worked out well in the end. I liked the book but not enough to read it again.

I thought this was good. It has some somewhat racist depictions of African diaspora people, but the storyline is fine. It bogs down towards the end.

Nice, typical Roberts, which is better than the average romance of the time.

I originally read this paperback when I was a teenager and I fell in love with it way back then. Over the years, I've purchased it 4 times to keep a copy on hand as when it's loaned out, I rarely get it back.
A wonderful historical romantic with a story line that keeps you interested thruout. Compared to some of today's newer stories, this one still wins me over!

I absolutely love this book.
From the back cover:

Slender as a reed, and as ready as fawn to flee a man's touch... yet 17 yr old Tess had mettle too, though it could not prevent her cruel step-father from gambling her honor in a card game...or Morgan Hamilton's forcing her into his marriage bed.

Morgan Hamilton...soldier, Scotsman, enigma. How Tess longed to love him... she who could not trust any man! Only on their tropical isle, only at her new plantation home, a land seething with slavery and vengeance, could tess grow to understand Morgan... and the ways of her own heart.

And my review:

This wasn't a bad book, in fact,I would consider it pretty decent one, considering it was written in 1980. Of course this means, its pretty out dated for a romance and not politically correct, as in, yes, you will see rape scenes in this book. So if stuff like this bother you then I suggest you skip this.

As a reader, when I look through romance reviews, I also look to see if the romance book has any cheating/ infidelities. In this book, there was no cheating done, however, the hero does get tempted but does not go through with it.

This is a tale about a mistreated girl, saved by a ex-sailor who's been granted a chance at different way of life by inheriting a plantation, their struggle to make a life for themselves in the untamed land. Fighting against slavery, learning to love....

Over all it was not a bad book, I would've given it a solid 4 stars if some parts of the books did not piss me off. LOL. There are much worst out there, I wrote this huge review because I did not think this book deserved 1 star over all.
