This book is dedicated to him as a small thanks for the countless fine films that he has decorated with his presence. Ryan glanced around for a last look at this particular bleak section of Deathlands. The clouds seemed almost on top of them, and he actually felt the first heavy drops of rain, acid on his skin. It wouldn't have been good to get caught out in it.

Deathlands is a desolate and mute testimony to the aftermath of the nuclear blasts that laid waste the earth. Wayfarers in their blighted world, Ryan Cawdor and his band of warrior survivalists search for a better future in the devastated ruins of a once-proud land. The radiation-poisoned hellhole is their home, and they are determined to defend it from the predatory foreigners emerging from a gateway.

And where its proud heart, the city of Washington, had stood, Ryan Cawdor faces double jeopardy posed by a barbaric baron, and the indifferent wrath of nature.

In the Deathlands, everyone and everything is fair game, but only the strong survive.

Surprising and disappointing that they couldn't keep the formula for success going. Retro-review circa 2009.

Oh my, here we have yet another "sophomore" album from a fantastic new band from Sweden that totally smokes. Writing in a similar vein to Italy's Mind Key - and sharing a lot of similarities with them in the melodic meets progressive realm - these guys have additionally succeeded in proving that "shred" is not dead. Guitarist and main songwriter Lindholm has to be heavily influenced by fellow countryman Yngwie, as his stylings and solos share much in common with Mr. Malmsteen. If you combine elements of Magnitude 9 and Yngwie Malmsteen you have a pretty good idea what this stuff sounds like. Having not heard the debut from this band, I can't say much about how this has improved or changed compared to that release, but I can say there aren't many bands out there doing this kind of thing well. Interesting, there is a multi-vocalist approach on this recording: the main singer is the very talented Goran Edman - who sings all but 4 songs; Oliver Hartmann (who reminds me much of DC Cooper) sings on 3 songs here, "Reach Out," "I'm Back Home" and the stunning "The Sacrifice;" and finally Mark Boals appears on "Venom." The compositions are lengthy, so this is definitely not "light listening," but the melodies are strong enough to hold the songs together. It would be great to see metal like this gain a greater foothold in the States. It could happen. After 2 years on the prog nation tour and with the release of Black Clouds and Silver Linings, Dream Theater has enjoyed some meaningful commercial success for the first time in their nearly 20 year career. If and when it does, I've no doubt bands like Vindictiv and Mind Key, and maybe even Pathosray could be leading the way.
