Digby interviews a dozen Australian poets – Judith Beveridge, Pamela Brown, Diane Fahey, Gwen Harwood, Dorothy Hewett, Antigone Kefala, Jan Owen, Dorothy Porter, Judith Rodriguez, Jennifer Strauss, Ania Walwicz and Fay Zwick. My one purchase from the entirely overwhelming Lifeline Book Fair in Brisvegas, I jumped into it and was absorbed from beginning to end. Digby interviews a dozen Australian poets – Judith Beveridge, Pamela Brown, Diane Fahey, Gwen Harwood, Dorothy Hewett, Antigone Kefala, Jan Owen, Dorothy Porter, Judith Rodriguez, Jennifer Strauss, Ania Walwicz and Fay Zwicky – only a very few of whom were on my radar. A Woman's Voice, Jenny Digby. Message 1 of 3 (311 Views).

Australian performance poetry is not a recent phenomenon in English-speaking Australia. It would not be beyond credibility to identify Henry Lawson as Australia's first professional performance poet, but there had been many performance poets in Australia prior to Lawson (real name Larsen, Norwegian father) from the First Fleet onwards. In fact prior to 1890 most poetry in Australia was received orally.

Twelve delightful interviews with contemporary Australian women poets transcending its national boundaries with a variety of insights into the nature of poetics and women's traditions. The interviews address topics in the art and process of writing, influences, poetic development, critical reception, and complex aesthetic, cultural, and political relationships including writing and gender. Each interview focuses on a topic relevant to that poet e.g. Dorothy Hewett discusses autobiographical poetry, Diane Fahey talks about mythological revision, and Antigone Kefala delves into multiculturalism. Skunk Black
Elegant language on both sides of the tape-recorder. A dialogue of great verve and flair.
crazy mashine
This is a marvellous book. Digby has written a very accessible book of interview with Australian female poets. The best thing about this book, for me, is the way it captures the ebb and flow of the creative process and the determination of female creators in the face of ridicule and discrimination.
