Mauberley is a learned, allusive, and difficult poem, extra-ordinarily concentrated and complex, Michael Alexander observed in The Poetic Achievement of Ezra Pound; a central difficulty the poetic sequence presents is its point of view. Most importantly, however, Mauberley served as Pound’s farewell to London and showed, according to Alexander, how profoundly Pound wished to reclaim for poetry areas which the lyric tradition lost to the novel in the 19th century-areas of social, public, and cultural life

It has made my love of Pound far more difficult―as it should. It's author, Daniel Swift, has a poetic touch to his prose and he manages in a mere 300 pages to bring alive the vanished world of politics and psychiatry in post-WWII America ("land of the free and home of the brave").

This is the best study in a single volume of all of Ezra Pound's poems and Cantos available, and it is highly readable. In fact, I have read this book twice now, once 8 or 9 years ago and then recently decided I did want a copy for myself.

Much have been said about the complex structure or unavailability of Pound's work. When I read this book I start to realise how much I was missing by just skipping the toughest pages of The Cantos, or by ignoring his earliest poetry. I believe this book is intended to both the scholar and the dilettanti (like me), because of it's structure clearness, and the care the author takes in giving enough examples for making clear what he is thinking. Nevertheless, due to the lenght of this book, it is imposible to attain a detailed overview of Pound's poetry (that is why I give to it only 4 stars). Despite of that, this book is a MUST read, if you wish to make a smooth approach to Pound's works (not only the so-called Pound's poetry is revised, but also his Translations).
