The bestselling Evans is back with another earnest tale set around a certain holiday in December, but this time he's got something up his sleeve.

I guessed he was a lawyer and, from his accoutrements, one who made good money. I, on the other hand, worked as a hotel and venue coordinator at a midlevel travel wholesaler booking educational trips for high school students. The company I worked for was called the International Consortium of Education, but we all just called it by its acronym, ICE, which was appropriate as I felt pretty frozen in my job.

Every year I read a Richard Paul Evans Christmas book to get in the holiday spirit, but I have to say this one was very disappointing. It started out great, got me involved in the characters, and had an intriguing mystique about it. However, just after halfway through, it begins to break down. It devolves into almost a travel log of the characters' European vacation, which bored me to death, and the twist involving the romance was just weird and kind of gross.

I think this is the first Evans novel in which I did not shed a tear. I was not even moved slightly. I think this was in part because of the materialistic wealth-making aspect of the book. It made me like the characters less that they were so willing to use inside information to gamble at the expense of people without this information. I found them unethical to say the least, and the characters became unappealing quickly from there. I was glad it was over, but because I enjoyed the first half, I give it two stars instead of one. No Christmas spirit in this one.

I have always been a fan of RPE's books. My favorite is The Looking Glass. I even enjoyed his recent The Walk and am looking forward to the next one in that particular series. However, I was extremely disappointed with Promise Me. While I realize Mr Evans was probably trying something different, I don't think it worked for him. Actually, I questioned whether he wrote Promise Me because to me, it just didn't feel like RPE at all.

The Good: Great title. Great cover. The essence of family, in a variety of forms, acceptance, and love, are ever present in RPE's novels. I have always appreciated those aspects in his writing. The message, even in the turmoil of our often messy lives, love can endure. It was a quick read. That's about the only good I can come up with for this novel.

The Bad: When I finished the last page I felt....um, weird. I enjoy a good paranormal story, however, RPE seemed to have a little trouble with this twist of the tale. I could never quite connect with the characters, any of them. I always felt outside the bubble. And then the whole premise...which I won't divulge because that's the heart of the story, was just off for me. The writing was stilted. The dialogue felt amateur, as if this were a first novel and RPE couldn't quite find his voice, rather Beth's voice. It all just didn't fall into place and basically, as I stated early, felt weird. I think he should have used a different direction with the Matthew, Charlotte, Beth angle and the reader wouldn't have been left with such an odd ending. Another word that comes to mind, awkward.

I really feel bad to diss RPE's book because I do like his writing style. However,I was disappointed with Promise Me.

Beth Cardall has a secret. For eighteen years, she has had no choice but to keep it to herself, but on Christmas Eve 2008, all that is about to change.

For Beth, 1989 was a year marked by tragedy. Her life was falling apart: her six-year-old daughter, Charlotte, was suffering from an unidentifiable illness; her marriage transformed from a seemingly happy and loving relationship to one full of betrayal and pain; her job at the dry cleaners was increasingly at risk; and she had lost any ability to trust, to hope, or to believe in herself. Then, on Christmas Day, as she rushed through a blizzard to the nearest 7-Eleven, Beth encountered Matthew, a strikingly handsome, mysterious stranger, who would single-handedly change the course of her life.
You'll absolutely love this book what a plot twist.
