One of the few books on psychoanalytic, particularly Kleinian, therapy, that I have come across that is not remote and bombastic;really down to earth, talking about real world patients, and real, honest to goodness sounding interventions, which can be useful in any setting.I am particularly recommending this book to busy psychiatrists, who don,t just do medication management, but are interested in offering some depth oriented, psychological interventions to their patients, and if my experience is any indication, there are a lot of such out there. It is very enlightening and encouraging to watch an analyst struggle with real people that all of us encounter every day,in the trenches,as it were.
However,it also needs to be said that, especially for non-analysts in patricular, it is not an easy read, and, as is common in such books, generalizations, ambiguities and seeminfg cotradictions, or, at least, confusing terminologies abound and the book needs to be read several times to help separate the really clinically useful and usable pearls from what seems to be, from our point of view, a needless allegiance to the older Kleinian conceptions. One wishes there were more material from the later "Kleinians",e.g., Bion,Britton,Feldman,Segal, etc..

Finally a talented psychoanalyst and writer opens up his office, to tell us about the real world, not the phantasyland psychoanalisys always tried to sell. Very useful, I recommend it.
