The Lehigh Valley Railroad dates as far back as 1853 and at its height connected Buffalo with eastern New Jersey. The Route of Black Diamond struggled after World War II and became part of Conrail. So, its motto, Route Of The Black Diamond, was quite befitting and led directly to both its rise in prosperity and downfall into bankruptcy. The LV has also gained quite a following by those who study the industry; it utilized an interesting variety of paint schemes while providing services ranging from rural branch lines to hotshot, time freights.

Constructed as the Easton and Amboy Railroad and opened by 1875, the Lehigh Valley Railroad was instrumental in developing the commerce and communities of central New Jersey through which it once ran. Originally built to haul unending trains of "black diamonds" from Pennsylvania to Perth Amboy, the Lehigh Valley Railroad became so much more than a conduit for shipping coal. In building across the state, it became instrumental in not only hauling produce to New York City markets but also for providing service to companies like Johns-Manville and Lionel Trains.

This work is a geographically-arranged summary of operations and personality of the men at worked on the Valley from NYC to Lehighton. The color photographs are well-chosen, beautifully printed, and thoughtfully captioned. The Black Diamond still lingers in the memory of many railfans(old and young). I appreciate the Author very much!!!

This book is well put together and is an excellent source of information on the LVRR. The way it is written puts you in a locomotive traveling from Jersey City to Lehighton. Lots of color photos depicting the LV from 1960-1976.
