At first I was turned off by the approach -- it is essentially an intermediate reference book for scholars -- short synopses of specific famous personalities of the Roman Republic and elements of Roman society, with heavy references to the source material woven directly into the narrative. I gradually grew to appreciate the methodology, especially when it dealt with controversial Romans of whom the historical record is somewhat thin -- especially Gaius Marius and Sulla. Too often scholars tend to opt for one perspective or the other of great leaders, and since there are relatively few books on some of them, the casual historian is forced to accept these views, in the absence of alternative sources. ANCIENT ROME hews to a reasonably classical approach to history -- here are the facts as we know them, here are the gaps, and here are the known biases of the sources we have to rely upon. You decide. If you are willing to persist, this yields a much richer picture than the usual comprehensive but one sided histories. 3D vs. 2D.

The book gives an impressive amount of information on early Roman society, culture, history and economics. It is a well-organised collection of brief readings from the works of many ancient authors, intended as a supplementary source for students of ancient history.

The organisation of the book is innovative. Instead of the usual long extracts from early writers' works, short passages are grouped under different headings: religion, social issues, economy and the like. It makes for easier reading, which should mean that more of it will actually be read and understood by more students than is usually the case.
