In this groundbreaking book, Dominic Sachsenmaier sets out to redress this imbalance by offering a series of new perspectives on the global and local flows, sociologies of knowledge, and hierarchies that are an intrinsic part of historical practice. These essays pay particular attention to comparative work on slavery and race relations, frontiers, nation-building and the growth of modern welfare states, and class and gender relations.

The comparative history of societies emerged as an important specialty among intellectuals in the Enlightenment in the 18th century, as typified by Montesquieu, Voltaire, Adam Smith, and others. Sociologists and economists in the 19th century often explored comparative history, as exemplified by Alexis de Tocqueville, Karl Marx, and Max Weber.

Gregg (history, Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and Princeton U.) provides alternative readings of familiar historical narratives. Among them are a look from overseas at US claims of exceptionalism, the genealogy of social history through E. P. Thompson's work on the British working class to that of his father on British India, and the imperial assumptions of C. L. R. James' anti-colonial text. Annotation c.
