Laura gave hundreds of lectures across Britain on her subjects of fungi, liverworts, Kew Gardens and North. Laura was born in London, daughter of Matthew Ponsonby, second Lord Ponsonby of Shulbrede, and his wife, Bess (nee Bigham). She lived her early years in Monewden, Suffolk, and went to boarding school at Langford Grove, near Lewes in East Sussex, and then to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London, where she studied the violin and piano.

North was born in Hastings, England, the eldest daughter of a prosperous land-owning family descended from the Hon. Roger North, younger son of Dudley North, 4th Baron North.

Over the course of her extensive travels which began in 1871, she documented over 900 species of plants, from North America to Asia, India to South America. This extraordinary gallery opened specially to hold her work in 1882.
