This comprehensive textbook offers a balanced introduction to contemporary security dilemmas. Sean Kay's central theme is the key but evolving role of power within the international system. He surveys the full range of conceptual frameworks for thinking about power and peace, ranging from realism and idealism to constructivism, postmodernism, and feminism. Combining theory and practice, Kay considers a wide array of case studies, including flashpoints in the Middle East, Asia, and Eurasia. He also explores trade and technology, the militarization of space, the privatization of security, the use of sanctions, ethnic conflict, transnational crime, and terrorism. The book goes beyond traditional concepts of security to consider human security in the form of challenges to human rights, democracy, population, health, environment, and energy. Writing in an engaging style, Kay integrates all security challenges in one easily accessible study. He stresses not only current threats such as terrorism and the war in Iraq but also the scope of challenges confronting humanity over the coming decades. By considering the value of a spectrum of approaches in real-world situations, Kay gives readers the tools they need to develop a thoughtful and nuanced understanding of global security.

Sean Kay has authored a very comprehensive and well researched book on global security; a subject which has come to the forefront in recent years.

He commences by examining who has the major power base as the world moves into the twenty-first century. He also looks at regional flashpoints, looking where are potential trouble spots, what makes them volatile and if there are strategies to diffuse, or mitigate the extent of their instability.

The author looks at how technology continues to be a major consideration in security operations around the world and how technology can affect security concerns in today's modern and very complex world. He also looks at the aspect of asymetrical conflict-where a lesser power can rapidly assume the role of a victor over a larger power in a conflict, due to their use of unconventional approaches to fight in the conflict. Examples are given in the book.

The author then examines the ever increasing concern of hman security around the world; some of the facts quoted are staggering, for example: on average, a person is killed or maimed by a landmine somewhere in the world everyday. The increasing concerns of water scarcity and possible misuse of nuclear energy are also ongoing concerns in an increasingly troubled world.

Do we have the answers? Can mankind reign in these major concerns to security and stability on a global scale and will the balance of power 'tip' at some stage in the future?

This book does not attempt to give answers to all the issues discussed, however outlines the problem and gives possible courses of action.

In summary, an extremely well researched and written book on a topic of concern to any student of international relations or security studies. Each chapter represents a continuous thread of discussion, which takes up from the previous chapter. Anyone studying international relations, security or political science will find this a very useful source of reference. Well done, Sean Kay!
