And make you wish every youth coach were a John Reed. 10 people found this helpful. The "B" team I took over had been last in the division for 5 years. In the draft I chose kids that would listen.

I was looking for a book for my husband, and found Reed's website. I was impressed with the articles I found there. I bought two of his books for my husband. Thing is, I can't put them down! I've read them both cover-to-cover. I like Reed's style of writing. I like his attitude toward youth sports. He is practical and realistic. It isn't all about winning, but about bringing out the best in the kids. (That may, in fact, result in a winning team!) I wholeheartedly recommend this book. Even for a mom who isn't much interested in sports! This book will make you interested in youth football if you weren't before. And make you wish every youth coach were a John Reed.

I pretty much had to take the coaching position because no one else would. I have never played football nor did I know anything about how to play the game. I only watched as a fan. I only had enough time to read read a couple of books. Not 50 like these other reviewers.

My 1st year I let the assistant run the offense as I had only read this book (Coaching Youth Football) and John T Reed's Gap-Air-Mirror Defense. The "B" team I took over had been last in the division for 5 years.

In the draft I chose kids that would listen. I was laughed at when I passed on a "star" player that had an awful attitude (later in the year his coach told me he was a PIA and wouldn't run/do what he was told and was sitting on the bench). I ran the drills in this book to choose which position each player would fill. I kept a record of each player's result of the drills on me. When I had a parent come to me and ask "Why is little Johnny playing X position and NOT [fill in star position] I had the proof right there to show them. The book is worth it alone for getting a parent to leave you alone the rest of the season.

I played the youngest rookies about 75% of the time, other teams, only the required 4 downs. My players LOVED running the plays (as described) instead of doing stupid running drills. They LOVED being able to get a drink any time. The 1st year the team struggled using the typical NFL passing style as youth football coaches like to do. Our defense kept us in the game, the GAP method helped the kids finish 3rd our first year.

By the second year I read John T Reed's Single Wing Offense for Youth Football. We used that on offense and GAP on defense. It took us to the Championship game. We lost, barely (lost our Center & Guard).

Let me add one more thing. All the other coaches HATED us. They hated our Offense and Defense. The GAP defense because they couldn't run the easy plays they were used to. They hated our offset line and single wing because, well a lot of reasons. The parents hated it because there was no little star QB or RB for their kid (they loved it just fine about half way through the year though).

A few years later I had a coach tell me the only kids with a decent understanding of the basics (including the bear crawl)were from my team those 2 years.

If you plan to ever coach youth football, then it is part of your responsibilities as a coach to get this book. PERIOD!
Football is the most complex sport played in America. No other sport requires eleven players to act in perfect unison against eleven other players. No other sport has THREE sections to it (offense, defense, and special teams).
If you want to do it right, get this book.
Here's a FEW things that coach Reed will teach you:
1) An effective youth offense that works. 2) An effective youth defense that works. 3) Why the pass is practically useless. 4) How to stop the sweep, the most feared play in youth football. 5) How to scout. (This, bar none, is THE most important thing you can do to make your team successful.) 6) How to organize practices. 7) How to teach kids. 8) How to teach SAFE fundamentals. 9) How to teach proper tackling... and GET IT! 10) How to coordinate your special teams. 11) How to cope with weaker and less talented players. 12) How to teach your players to WIN.
Believe me, nothing is more satisfying than seeing the smiles on a player's face after a football game. This book will help you put them there.
I've read over eighty books on coaching football, but Coach Reed's material is not just READ, it's STUDIED. I have all of his books, and they are worth every penny.
If you coach football, YOU NEED TO GET THIS BOOK.
Oh, and if you're one of my opponents. I'd rather you didn't.
