In some respects "The Wall Street Self-defense Manual" does seem a little too simplistic and reads like an extended Slate colum. What sacrifices are made in terms of informational density are largely made up for in clarity and simplicity.

Henry Blodget has done the investing public a great service in publishing this cheaply priced paperback. The book gives much common sense to investing. It's a great antidote to many of the other books. AMONG WALL STREET classics, probably none is more hilarious than "Where Are the Customers' Yachts?" First published almost seven decades ago, the book still has heaps to teach today's investor. The Wall Street Self-Defense Manual," which came out in early 2007, will probably never be considered a classic, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Although the author's recommendation to get a diversified portfolio and leave it alone sounds simple, there is LOTS of wisdom buried here. The hardest part (like anything else good for you) is doing it: you have to make yourself ignore all those inner demons who urge you to roll the dice just one more time. One way to get started is by allocating say 40% of your portfolio to this approach, waiting a couple years, then comparing the results of your genius stock picking to Blodgett's diversified portfolio. Your reviewer did, and he just converted the other 60% of his portfolio to Henry's approach. Try it, you'll like it. Then spend some time perfecting your smug smile in the mirror so that when your friends start talking about all their genius stock picks, you can flash the smile and say "Well, I'm pretty satisfied with my portfolio."

I've been in the investment business for nearly 30 years and have been on both sides (working for a Wall Street firm, then becoming a fee-only registered investment advisor) and have had the same "epiphany" about investing that Henry apparently has had. I was shocked when I started reading his book. It was not what I expected and it says exactly what I would say if I took the time to write one. If you are ready to stop listening to Wall Street and the financial media and are ready to start investing intelligently, THIS is the book to read.

If you already know a fair amount about passive index fund investing, you aren't going to find any new information in this book. With that being said, this book is perfect for someone who still relatively new to investing or thinks that they are somehow going to beat the market. Blodget lays out a series of common pitfalls that amateur investors face and provides simple examples for each situation. Ideally I will be able to convince my dad to rework his portfolio after he reads this. If I can get him to do that, then Blodget will have more than redeemed himself as far as I am concerned.

The very best book on investing. Explains why you're a laughed-at idiot if you try to complete with the pros, rips apart any strategy you may have other than index investing. Properly titled book, explains how to keep yourself from being fleeced by an industry designed to fleece you. I read this book when it was first published 10 years ago or whatever, made significant changes, and my net worth really took off, from a few hundred thousand dollars to 1.2 million now, and I swear to god I owe it all to Henry Blodget.

Wish I would have read this (and bought index funds as the author suggested), as trading individual stocks usually does not match the performance of index stocks............I found this out by personal experience...........I made money, but not as much as I could have.
