This book has shown that there are particular econometric problems associated with the estimation of energy elasticities. On the one hand, in the analysis of global warming, the unit of interest (carbon) is not energy itself but is instead merely embodied in energy carriers; hence the substitution of low-carbon fuels for high-carbon fuels may be more important than the conservation of energy. This implies that the relationship between energy consumption and CO2 emissions must be analysed in terms of individual fuels and not energy per se.
