SAMUEL JOHNSON is the only British author, as far as I know, to have been burned in effigy on American soil - in Massachusetts, in 1775, in response to his pamphlet ''Taxation No Tyranny. But these are the abstractions of political theory. In practice circumstances alter cases, and Johnson plainly failed to grasp (as the Whigs he reviled did not) the nature of the problem he was dealing with, the evolution of the American colonies to a point at which they could no longer be treated as dependencies. A warning, perhaps, against the kind of ironclad ''realism'' that often finds it easier to detect an opponent's fallacy than to adjust to a new reality.

The book is short enough to be read in an hour. The content and dialog is somewhat dry and hokey at times. Yet inside the book contains several nuggets that compensate for any of the negative aspects of its presentation. The ideas are thought provoking, logical, and they work. If you struggle with some of the choices in your life or even find that you are not getting the results you'd prefer from some of your major decisions, this short book is well worth the effort.

This book sets out, in the context of a story, an excellent system for running checks on one's own decisions. I recommend it highly to anyone who has ever wondered why they repeatedly have made bad decisions (in the sense of not reflecting their own true values and interests) in the past, or would like to make even better decisions in the future. Through two questions, each having three aspects, the decision maker can reflect on whether they are dealing with what is real or imagined, and whether they are being true to themselves. A very short, easy read, but extremely useful. Highly recommended for everyone, including young people.

Great little gem of a book. Told in Johnson's characteristic quasi-parable form, this book walks us through grounded, tempered decision making questions that employ both the head and the heart. I've read it and recounted its message to parents, students, friends and family. If I could keep a box under my desk to give away, this book might just transform our school culture, it's that good! Simple, common sense, and compatible with all belief systems. Easy to read, easy to work into meaningful conversation, easy to teach.

I read this book while we were away for a long weekend. It gave me time to think about the points that were raised, and I have been able to put them into practice. Each segment has an easy to refer to check of how you are going, that you can keep referring back to. A good "how to" book, that I have been able to put into practise.

Johnson offers a very helpful book in this volume. He presents a simple guide for decision-making, one that will undoubtedly enhance the process for many persons. He essentially describes a two-step decision procedure, examining one's thinking on a given issue, then examining one's feelings on the same subject.
While not as good as the One-Minute Manager classic and its accompanying volumes, this work likely will help those persons seeking to bolster their decision-making abilities.
