Robert A. Stern's work is generally classified as postmodern, though a more useful classification would be a particular emphasis on context and the continuity of traditions. He may have been the first architect to use the term "postmodernism", but more recently he has used the phrase "modern traditionalist" to describe his work.

Stern is famous for designing grand multifamily buildings and single-family homes in modern traditional style. Mr. Stern, 78, the former dean of the Yale School of Architecture and founder of Robert . Stern Architects, specializes in limestone-clad structures. He is perhaps best known for designing 15 Central Park West, a limestone Manhattan condo building that's broken price records. Based in New York City, the firm has about 260 employees who travel the world to work on small and large residential, cultural, and academic projects, from Lima, Peru, to Shanghai.

In over thirty years of practice, Robert A. M. Stern has developed a distinctive architecture committed to the synthesis of tradition and innovation and, above all, to the creation and enhancement of a meaningful sense of place. Inspired by the great legacy of American architecture, the firm of Robert A. M. Stern Architects has produced a variety of building types in a range of stylistic vocabularies. The design of houses, for which the firm initially gained notice, remains a cornerstone of the practice. Beautifully illustrated in color, this major monograph -- a companion volume to the best-selling Robert A. M. Stern: Buildings -- thoroughly documents more than forty-five houses built over the course of thirty years. These distinguished houses are located in diverse settings across the United States, from San Francisco's Russian Hill to the Rocky Mountains to the Long Island and New England coasts. In every case, Stern has emphasized the importance of context by exploring the nature of place through houses that embody the region's vernacular architectural heritage, as well as gracefully reflect each site's unique natural setting. Whether considering classical New York town houses, Shingle Style "cottages" by the sea, or Scandinavian log houses as reinterpreted on the American frontier, Stern has fostered a strong sense of architectural continuity and connection to the past by participating in the dialogue across time that he believes lies at the heart of architecture.

What a beautiful display of true Architecture for Architectures' sake. Yeah, you may need a bit of $$ to personally afford buildings with this calibur of workmanship, but it will be well worth it and timeless. Builders and purchasers of todays' Suburb homes need to look to great works like these to realize the real issue of urban sprawl.
Great book. Great photo's. Great ideas. Great craftmanship. Outstanding architecture.

Robert Sterns homes are so elegant and tasteful, even if they are often enormous in size. This book does a wonderful job of captureing these homes at their best, the photographs are vivid and very well done and the homes themselves are amazing. Mr. Stern has a knack for making a traditional home somehow eclectic, he is true to the style, but adds interesting touches that at first glance you would not think would work, but somehow in Robert Stern hands they come out spectacular. If you have any interest in amazing residental architecture, then buy this book, you won't be disappointed.
