The Ultimate Alphabet book. Artist Mike Wilks set out to depict as many words as possible in twenty-six images corresponding to the alphabet. His four-year painting odyssey resulted in a suite of magnificent compilations, all minutely detailed, masterfully rendered, and slightly surreal. Each image contains dozens, if not hundreds, of items all starting with the same letter. I first heard of Mike Wilks when I was nearly 16. We saw a video about him in my art class at school back in 1992. All the kids looked pretty impressed, I certainly was. The film showed the way Wilks produces his pictures. We saw his studio in the Pyrenees mountains, an obsessively clean, sparkling white room, where the artist works in complete silence. The video made it quite clear that Wilks is a perfectionist, treating every image with the utmost care. I finally bought "The Annotated Ultimate Alphabet" about five years after seeing the video.

A single object may be described by more than one word beginning with the same letter: for instance, a dalmatian is also a dog and a witch is also a woman.

COOL ALPHABET BOOK! GREAT PICTURES!

I bought this book in its original format around the time it came out, and I loved it then. At some point in the following years, I realized it had completely disappeared, probably in one move or another. I finally decided to buy another copy.

Imagine my surprise when the box that came to my door was much larger than I expected it to be, and seemed to weigh a ton. I tried to remember as I opened it what else I had ordered without remembering. But no! This version not only comes with the original book, but also with a separate book to be used as a guide/cheat sheet - an EXCELLENT addition, because the pictures are so packed with various items (everything on each successive page starts with the next letter of the alphabet). The author is absolutely ingenious, and the artwork is impressive. And believe me, you will learn about things (animals, plants, geology, geography, and - really I can't think of anything that ISN'T in there) you never knew existed.

This book deserves a good long (long, long, long) perusal. And then a few more. I can't recommend it highly enough to do it justice.

I originally purchased the Ultimate Alphabet, with its associated Workbook, back in the 1980s from Walden Books at the Summit Mall in Niagara Falls, New York. If you haven't seen MIke Wilks book, it comprises 26 pictures of his paintings, each painting utilizing a letter from the alphabet and incorporating images which begin with that letter.

The Workbook is a paper checklist of those images and you simply mark off each word as you locate it in the picture. The Workbook, and Ultimate Alphabet book, are ideal gifts for those who work crossword puzzles.

I long ago misplaced my Workbook and ordered another copy. The item received was as described by the seller, a touch faded and worn, but usable.

I would rate this item five stars if the Workbook had been printed on erasable plastic, such as a dry erase board, and packaged with a non-permanent marker. As is, once you mark the boxes, you can't uncheck them without erasing and heavily damaging the paper - even to wearing a hole through the page. This means the Workbook can only be used once.

I suggest making copies of the checklists, stapling the pages, and handing them out to family or friends. Set an egg timer and everyone try to find as many items within the time limit.

I have heard of Mike Wilks but I never relized the depth of his works until I purchased the Ultimate Alphabet app for my iPad. The iPad app only goes all the way to the letter "I" for now. After using the app, which has cryptic clues and online links to the objects in the pictures, I really wanted the actual book. I finally found the book here on Amazon and it is fantastic! There are so many things to find and every time I look at the pictures again, I seem to find something new that I did not notice before. I am trying to find a resonably priced Annotated Ultimate Alphabet book so I can identify some of the more unfamiliar items. I am currently deployed with the US Army and I brought this book with me and I look through it when I get a chance and when I want a "break from technology". The iPad app is woderful, but having an actual pen and paper to write the words out, can be more fun.

This set of books is amazing. I love the talent of Mike Wilks. We found him through the game Scrutineyes years ago, which featured his artwork as part of an object-finding game. My only gripe is I wish the format of these books was larger so that you could enjoy the detail of the art better. The Scrutineyes panels were much larger, which was nice, especially for those with older eyes. Overall, though, I highly recommend these amazing pieces of art!

Returned. Creepy in a way that isn't represented by the store page. Others may like, but it just wasn't for my family and I.

There is no better way to teach a young person how to appreciate the depth and detail that can be found in works of art, if only one knows how to look for it.
