This comprehensive survey traces the development of portrait painting in Northern and Southern Europe during the Renaissance, when the genre first flourished. These two regions developed their own distinct styles and techniques but were also influenced by one another in fascinating ways. If you have any interest in Renaissance portraits this book should be on your shopping list. It has a wonderful selection of top class artists ranging from Van Eyck to lesser known artists like Mor (Painting of Queen Mary Tudor). You'll find some familiar portraits reproduced here, along with many others that are scarcer in art books. The essays highlighting various aspects of Renaissance painting and WHY these pictures were painted and where they were hung in houses is written by various experts.

This is a good addition to Lorne Campbell's earlier book Renaissance Portraits: European Portrait-Painting in the 14th, 15th and 16th Centuries. The reproduction quality of these images is lovely and clear - but it doesn't just include paintings, there are also a selection of portrait sculptures which are facinating in their own right making this a book you won't regret getting.

This is an absolutely beautiful book. I have an extensive library of art books and this is one of the best. It is in a large format and has numerous beautifully printed color reproductions of Renaissance portraits in medals, painting, and sculpture, mostly painting. Many of the reproductions are full page! The essays are insightful and informative as well. A glorious book.

The catalogue for the current exhibition at the National Gallery in London, this book is a wonderful study of the art of portraiture in the Renaissance. Highlighting famous works by Van Eyck (the Arnolfini Betrothal), Holbein (the Ambassadors)or Raphael that belong to the museum, alongside lesser-known works by the likes of Metsys (a wonderful pair of portraits from 1513, one - long a part of the National Gallery's collection - of an ugly old woman, and its companion piece, an old man - probably her unlucky husband - belonging to a private collection), Pontormo or Beccafumi, the book succeeds in placing the portraits in their historical context, explaining their role in Renaissance society and stressing the fact that many were painted based on oral descriptions of the model or even by studying the corpse of the dead model, making the posthumous portrait a genre in its own right (as in the famous portrait by Ghirlandaio of an old man with his famously ugly nose, now in the Louvre).

Top-quality illustrations make this book a valuable addition to any fine arts library.
