Jozéf Turczyński (1884 – 1953) was a Polish pianist, pedagogue and musicologist who exercised a powerful influence over the development of piano teaching and performance, especially in the works of Frédéric Chopin, during the first half of the 20th century. Turczyński was born in Żytomierz, in a part of Volhynia which is now in the Ukraine. He was first a pupil of his father

Most of Frédéric Chopin's polonaises were written for solo piano. He wrote his first polonaise in 1817, when he was 7; his last was the Polonaise-Fantaisie of 1846, three years before his death.

Nocturnes and Polonaises - Frederic Chopin

Nocturnes and Polonaises - Frederic Chopin.

Frédéric Chopin did not attempt to preserve definitive versions of his compositions because he disliked the labor of writing down notes. Improvising his performances at will, he never played a piece the same way twice. As a result, there are numerous texts of any single Chopin work and the editions of these texts have more editorial "improvisation" than do the texts of most composers. One of the most respected editions was prepared by Carl Mikuli, Chopin'sstudent and, later, his teaching assistant, who was in a particularly privilegedand advantageous position to take into account all that the master brought to his playing and teaching. His editorial contributions to this volume reflect his understanding of the principles that underly this body of work, imparted to him in word and deed by the composer.The 20 nocturnes reproduced here include Opp. 9, 15, 27, 32, 37, 48, 55, 62, 72, and the posthumous Nocturne in C-sharp Minor. The 11 polonaises include Opp. 26, 40, 44, 53, 61,71, and the posthumous Polonaise in G-sharp Minor.Serious pianists will want to have these authoritative texts of 31 of Chopin’s most popular and enduring works.

My children all play Chopin ... I am not talented enough or maybe I just don't have time to learn ... but they say these are the best books.

Although having it spiral bound would be better, it's wonderful to have these resources used at great prices!! For the songs that get played over and over again we either copy them or rip the binding out of the book. Of course it could be taken to a professional book binder to have it spiral bound but we try to do things as frugally as possible.

Great buy!!

I purchased this book because it was advertised as a Paderewski edition, in an attempt to answer a question that I have on the Nocturne #20, C# minor, Op. Posthumous. It was suggested that the Paderewski edition may more true to what Chopin intended, and I was surprised that I received the Mikuli edition.
I have studied this Nocturne, and also listened to several recodings, mand this is my question;
The time signature at the beginning of the Nocturne is 4/4,tempo
Lento. The time signature changes to 2/4 at measure 32, and to 3/4 for measures 33 to 40.However, in all the recordings I listened to, the pianist plays measures 33 to 40,at about twice the speed, although most editions, including this Mikuli, do not show a change of tempo at measure 33. I did find one edition by Joseffy, published by Schirmer, which shows a tempo change to Animato at measures 30 through 40. I am still looking for the most correct interpretation.

This is NOT the Paderewski edition even though they are listed as the editors. The book is fine, though it is missing several piano pieces expected from the Paderewski edition. It is an incomplete version of nocturnes and polonaises.

Beautiful book.

Doesn't even come with the Grand Polonaise!!! Part of the reason I got the book...it's missing more than that too.

I use this book to teach with at school. It is great for my private piano studio and helpful in teaching the concepts it covers.
I have purchased all of Chopin's works in the Dover publishing collection. It's great to get multiple sets of music in one compilation.
