I knew very little about Woody Guthrie prior to watching the documentary. I was impressed with the quality of this documentary, and the view it gave, not only of Woody Guthrie's life but also of the experiences of those who lived through the dust bowl and the great depression. It is hard to comprehend the enormous amount of music that Guthrie created but it is clear, he was the people's musician and spokesperson.

The best collection of memorabilia of Woody Guthrie published by his sister, Mary Jo, who is still living in Shawnee, OK, as of 12/2015. Wonderful coffee table edition.

This is an inside look at the Guthrie family from the youngest child's perspective, and really shows the person they knew and adored. The family had such adversity, but dealt with it all with wit and wisdom, and looked for the positive in everything. The photos and handwritten letters are amazing.

This is a fascinating book containing the `treasures' of Mary Jo Guthrie Edgmon, the sister of Woody Guthrie. There are many reminiscences, letters, drawings and photographs from her collection.
Arlo Guthrie, Woody's son,- describes her in the forward, "There's no one who knew, loved or communicated with my father for longer, no one in this world knew him better throughout the entire range of his life than his little sister, and my aunt, Mary Jo." Woody left so much behind besides his music, the family is still finding lyrics and other materials today, so prolific was Woody.

The book has as much text as illustrations. The material ranges from Woody's younger years, his military service, which many are unaware of, until the time of his death. The subjects covered are his years in Okemah, Oklahoma, in Texas and California and New York, his marriages and his children and especially his love for his family. There is a history of Oklahoma and Woody's birthplace and in a preface; Guy Logsdon touches on the effects of the blacklist.

Wherever he went he was an inexhaustible letter writer. Many of his letters are typed and are shown as full page images. We also are able to see his homemade Christmas cards and the homemade birth announcements of some of his children. We see his sorrows and joys and the advent of Huntington's disease which finally put an end to this man who many only know as a songwriter.

I really wish there would have been a family tree. We meet so many of Woody's relatives. The print is not the darkest black and some reminiscences are done in light black on a gray background, not making them the easiest to read.
The book is still something very special - for all who love Woody Guthrie and the music of America.

This is a lovely and loving book by Guthrie's sister. Mary Jo shares many personal treasures that she received from her brother.
The anecdotes she tells show the kindness that older brother Woody gave to little Sis. There are many photographs of his letters and other gifts he passed on to family members. So glad that Mary Jo saved all this.

I love the story she tells about how a young, married Woody, just starting a family, impulsively bought a sweater that Mary Jo admired in the store. It became Mary Jo's most prized possession, but no doubt is wife and young family could have used that money more. That's Woody I guess.

These personal accounts give you much better understanding of the man.
