Ralph Gibson (born January 16, 1939) is an American art photographer best known for his photographic books. His images often incorporate fragments with erotic and mysterious undertones, building narrative meaning through contextualization and surreal juxtaposition. Gibson enlisted in the United States Navy in 1956 and became a Photographers Mate studying photography until 1960. Gibson then continued his photography studies at the San Francisco Art Institute between 1960 - 1962

Publisher's Description. Known for his enigmatic, high contrast images, Ralph Gibson developed a distinct style of elegant and spare surrealism in the 1960s and 1970s. His famous books The Somnambulist, Déjà Vu, and Days at Sea developed an almost cult-like following. Tropism is a definitive retrospective of Gibson's work, published to coincide with the 1987 exhibition held at the International Center of Photography in New York.
