Now Playing Maya Angelou Introduces "Letter to My Daughter". Maya Angelou is a must-read author. But that's not why I bought this book over and over. I give this book away, to my friends, to my family, to coworkers. Once I donated a copy to a community center.

Letter to My Daughter (2009) is the third book of essays by African-American writer and poet Maya Angelou. By the time it was published, Angelou had written two other books of essays, several volumes of poetry, and six autobiographies. She was recognized and highly respected as a spokesperson for black people and women, and had become "a major autobiographical voice of the time".

Angelou's book, Letter to My Daughter caught my eye immediately as I was browsing the shelves at Barnes and Noble. I picked it up and settled in a comfy chair with my latte and my soon to be good friend Maya. I was ready for advice, wisdom, love and experiences from a woman who has lived many more lives than I could ever imagine. Letter to My Daughter highlights experiences in Maya Angelou's life that have helped shape her. They range from topics such as ignorance, racism, education, love, faith, and upbringing. I was drawn in until I realized that a good portion of the chapters were taken from another work of hers, Won't Take Nothing for My Journey Now.

As often happens, the leader of the group showed herself immediately. There was no question as to who was the boss. The woman was small, with a quick smile and a high-pitched voice. ement I made with a sarcastic rejoinder.

Maya Angelou is a must-read author. And this book, being accessible and honest for any audience, is an excellent way to introduce yourself to her work.
But that's not why I bought this book over and over. I give this book away, to my friends, to my family, to coworkers. Once I donated a copy to a community center. It's a book meant to be shared, so I buy it and give it away to people who are important to me. It's a book to read when you feel lost in the world, and in times when you're at peace with life.
Angelou shares her past and her hopes for the future. She talks about her most painful moments and moments of incandescent happiness. In these stories and essays, she shares experiences from her life that have shaped her and that she has grown from, experiences she wants to pass on that others might benefit from.
It's like a love letter to the world.

This passage is a good summation of the general theme of this book:
"When I decide to write anything, I get caught up in my insecurity despite the prior accolades. I think, uh, uh, now they will know I am a charlatan that I really cannot write and write really well. I am almost undone, then I pull out a new yellow pad and as I approach the clean page, I think of how blessed I am.
The ship of my life may or may not be sailing on calm and amiable seas. The challenging days of my existence may or may not be bright and promising. Stormy or sunny days, glorious or lonely nights, I maintain an attitude of gratitude. If I insist on being pessimistic, there is always tomorrow.
Today I am blessed."

I feel as if Dr. Angelou is speaking directly to me. When I need the wisdom and love of a mother, I open this book. Even when the book doesn't directly address my concern, I feel a sense of comfort that makes me feel that everything will be alright... This too shall pass... and this is only one day, one season and life is so FULL of many adventures. Dr. Angelou's books make me want to live a FULL life and she keeps me from being stagnant and motivated to keep dreaming, living and advancing in the world.
