The Rev. Archibald Henry Sayce (25 September 1845 – 4 February 1933), was a pioneer British Assyriologist and linguist, who held a chair as Professor of Assyriology at the University of Oxford from 1891 to 1919.

The Rev. Archibald Sayce was born in Shirehampton, Bristol, to a family of Shropshire descent.

Old Persian and Akkadian cuneiform had recently been deciphered, and popular enthusiasm for these discoveries was running high when Sayce began his academic career at Oxford in 1869. Chapter appendices examine topics such as the vocal organs of animals and the various phonetic alphabets then in use.

This is a reproduction of a book published before 1923.
