I thought this would be hard to find, but there it was. Very helpful!
Depressing story. It made me so sad that I couldn't read it from my tears just a few pages in. Too bad because I was looking forward to reading in Italian.
The Easy Italian Readers are my favorite series because if you're a visual learner, like me, then this book is perfect. It's full of illustrations that further help with your practice of vocabulary.
I am taking Italian lessons. My teacher recommended this book for us to translate in class. It is a classic children's book in Italy. She loves the format of this particular publication. It is designed for teaching with great footnotes and questions on the chapters. It is not just the standard story book.
This book, written in Italian, is based on a vocabulary of about 1200 words (level B). Difficult words are explained in simple Italian (no English translations), and throughout the book you will find drawings of animals or objects that provide additional help to understand the story.

In this moving story, a grandmother brings up her granddaughter only to find herself alone in old age because the teenage girl broke up the relationship and decided to go the United States. Knowing that her granddaughter would reject any news from her, the old woman still writes to her every day, without ever mailing the letters. In simple words she explains her life -- something she had not done when the girl grew up--she explains her problems, her decisions and why she had no choice to act otherwise. It is a wonderful story that shows the many problems our grandparents faced due to the many social restrictions and taboos.

Other Italian books for advanced beginners are "Don Camillo" by Giovanni Guareschi, "Ti ho sposato per allegria" by Natalia Ginzburg, "Mio marito" by Dacia Maraini, "Veleno a colazione" by Tiziana Merani, "La casa sulla scogliera" by Cinzia Medaglia, and "Delitto in piazza del campo" by Maria Luisa Banfi.
