At the time when southern Italy was an isolated and underdeveloped region, Douglas wrote this 1915 travel guide to bring the beauty that he found in Calabria to the reading public. Inspired by the landscape. I FIND it hard to sum up in one word the character of Lucera-the effect it produces on the mind; one sees so many towns that the freshness of their images becomes blurred. The houses are low but not undignified; the streets regular and clean; there is electric light and somewhat indifferent accommodation for travellers; an infinity of barbers and chemists.

Book written in 1915, about a trip thru the South of Italy. Elegant prose, good eye for the customs and beliefs of the extremely poor people of that area,. His observation that, probably, at the time of classical Greece, it was the same, or worse, and that we can forget everybody walking around in clean, elegant tunics, discussing philosophical questions. Makes me wonder.
Love Me
Just a wonderful book, for Italophiles and long-time residents of southern Italy! (note: Written in the early 1900's.) Where else could you find a time-capsule travelogue written by a grumpy old Scottish pedophile with a sense of ironic humor who really can write?? Loved it.

This book is good resource for history of the Calabria. It wont satisfy the casual reader looking for sheer entertainment.
