Essayists on the Essay.

Essayists on the Essay. Bill was an undergraduate at the time and his college career had recently been interrupted by cancer. He was studying with my colleague and friend Professor Bob Cowser, who introduced us to each other. When Carl Klaus and I began our work on Essayists on the Essay we already had a pretty exhaustive list of English and American essayists, but we wanted to make the book more global and so went looking elsewhere. We found great pieces from many places, including especially French-speaking Canada. The first historically and internationally comprehensive collection of its kind, Essayists on the Essay is a path breaking work that is nothing less than a richly varied source book for anyone interested in the theory, practice, and art of the essay.

Most were written in English, but the foregrounding of the Anglo-American tradition-perhaps to be expected from an American academic press-is not egregious. The Cambridge Companion to the Rolling Stones, the first book of academic essays about the band, considers not only what the band accomplished, but why, 60 years since they formed, the Rolling Stones still matter. Montaigne to Our Time. by Carl H. Klaus & Ned Stuckey-French. The American Essay in the American Century, 2011). A genuine essay, writes Cynthia Ozick, has no educational, polemical, or sociopolitical use; it is the movement of a free mind at play.

Klaus's newest book is A Self Made of Words: Crafting a Distinctive Persona in Nonfiction Writing (October 2013). His other work on persona is The Made-Up Self: Impersonation in the Personal Essay.

From a buoyant introduction that provides a sweeping historical and analytic overview of essayists’ thinking about their genre—a collective poetics of the essay—to the detailed headnotes offering pointed information about both the essayists themselves and the anthologized selections, to the richly detailed bibliographic sections, Essayists on the Essay is essential to anyone who cares about the form.

This collection provides teachers, scholars, essayists, and readers with the materials they need to take a fresh look at this important but often overlooked form that has for too long been relegated to the role of service genre—used primarily to write about other more “literary” genres or to teach young people how to write. Here, in a single celebratory volume, are four centuries of commentary and theory reminding us of the essay’s storied history, its international appeal, and its relationship not just with poetry and fiction but also with radio, film, video, and new media.
