Editorial Reviews Book Description

Michael Cremo and Mukunda Goswami outline a challenging new vision of humankind and the natural world, revealing how a spiritual approach can save humanity from the environmental catastrophe we have been heading towards. They contend that real solutions to our current environmental problems will be implemented only through a shift in human consciousness and an awakening to the spiritual dimension of this crisis. The authors touch on a wide range of topics, including the earth's threatened wildlife, shrinking rainforests, eroding soil, proliferation of trash, and toxic waste disposal. The negative environmental impact of meat consumption is also uncovered--deforestation, agricultural inefficiency, and air and water pollution. Its in-depth exploration of history, scientific theory, and the metaphysics of karma offers concerned earth-watchers a spiritual blueprint for creating a better world.

The Bible says "Be ye transformed by the renewal of your mind", and that is one of the themes of this book, and what makes it unique as a work of environmental awareness reporting, and advice. This was a bit of a suprise for me, since I am used to Mr. Cremo works being about Forbidden Archaeology, and such, but this one is a statement of some aspects of the environmental challenges we currently face, plus many little known, but compelling, and workable solutions to many of the challenges. In numerous places of the book, the spiritual way of life embraced by the Krishna Consciousness movement, ISKCN, is both reported on, and suggested as way to avoid the materialistic patterns of thought and behavour that have led to the current problem situations we face today. There are also some accounts of Krishna based farm colonys being set up at various locations around the world that use, often. low tech farm methods that are more environmentally friendly, while at the same being relatively high yielding, and self sustaining, and also of the encouraging contentment the people have who are a part of these colonys. The chapters on both consciousness, and the scientific community's responsibility are backed up with some quotes by some very respected men of science and politics and philosophy, as well. This is a brief read, but a good starting point in a serious inquiry into the respective field, and/or means of self improvement and self realization.

The authors approach the issue of environmental crisis from the Krishna consciousness point of view. The authors are part of ISKCON movement. The book should interest any one concerned about environmental crisis even if he is not interested in ISKCON movement. The part one introduces in a concise manner the nature of crisis in all contexts : water pollution, soil loss, acid rain etc. The second part discusses the case of meat eating. It looks at the issue primarily from ecological point of view. Third part is the key argument of the book. It identifies that all attempts to solve the crisis based on materialistic perspective, are bound to fail and it advocates the spiritual approach. It identifies the problem of sense-gratification as the root cause. Seeking nonmaterial happiness is the only solution. Fourth chapter identifies that modern science led to the crisis. To some extent, Capra and others have also argued like this. But this chapter is weak in detail. The later chapters delve into how ISKCON can offer the solution to the crisis. Discussions on Bhagavat-Gita is followed by discussion on karma and meat eating. Last chapter give details about various rural communities of ISKCON. There are short biographies of various people working in this direction. The book is well written. The layout is good. The number of pages is just 95. The book has index and bibliography. Ideal book for a gift.

Understanding the root of contemporary issues and the true solutions is a requisite for real advancement for humanity. No problem can be solved by the same consciousness that created it. You need a different consciousness. This book will help you put things in proper perspective. This knowledge to see things from a different consciousness (that has been time-tested/proven) will help you in all lines of life. For the good of humanity and Earth, I think this book should be taught in all schools / universities. This is a powerful, practical and concise book and highly recommended.
