Balladolbine

Author James Steinberg has been a devotee of Adi Da since the 1970s, and he wrote in the Introduction to this 1991 book, "Sri Da Avabhasa, the Divine World-Teacher, has asked for a book to be written on the Guru-devotee relationship as He Teaches it... His Spiritual Blessing and Work with me for the past eighteen years have already worked miracles in me... how can I tell you Who He Really Is? There is no way to describe it in words... I have in the course of this book provided an orientation to the Guru-devotee relationship, which, when rightly understood, is found to be at the core of all the world's great religious and Spiritual traditions." (Pg. 17-18) He adds, "I write not as a scholar, but as a devotee of Da Avabhasa." (Pg. 23)

He notes, "On one occasion... in 1981, Sri Da Avabhasa was Giving Communications regarding some of His devotees who had lost the thread of the right sacred orientation to practice. Da Avabhasa was upset about the whole matter... Traditionally, the Sat-Guru's anger is understood to be another form of his Blessing... In the midst of this strong emotional expression, suddenly Sri Da Avabhasa stopped... and in a very direct and simple manner He said to this individual: 'you think that I am angry now and really uset. You are missing the point. I am not an ordinary man. I am Realized... I use this anger to Serve others... to allow My body-mind to be the means by which My displeasure can be communicated to others...' The devotee felt gratefully restored to a right understanding, and in the next moment [Da's] tone changed completely, and He began again to Give 'angry' instructions to His devotees." (Pg. 89)

Steinberg confides, "As a devotee... I am outraged by this 'acceptable' bigotry that still persists in our general culture. Such terms as 'brainwashing' and 'programming' bear no relationship to authentic religious practices... For many months in the mid-1980s, the life of my own Guru... and the life of my own family and Spiritual community were severely disrupted by misinformed and inflamed public opinion, fueled by representatives of respected media outlets who felt no responsibility to truly find out the facts." (Pg. 127)

He recalls, "I had spent many years building up my collection of books...Sri Gurudev Da Love-Ananda Gave Communications about my obsession with books... I was never to own another book, period, besides those of the Way of the Heart... As soon as I returned home from work that evening, I simply packed all my books into my car and drove off to the Mountain of Attention Sanctuary... I continued to be Graced to serve Sri Gurudev Da Love-Ananda by securing thousands upon thousands of books for His review, developing the libraries ... and doing research in the Spiritual traditions for many of [his] 'considerations' and publications. But ... I was able to steer clear of the obsession with knowledge and control through owning books." (Pg. 196-197)

He notes, "As I served Him... as sense of how I could best serve Him would be Revealed to me. I once asked Him how to choose books to send for His review, and His reply was: 'Study what I have looked at or done in the past.' I began to become more sensitive to Him by this study, and I became more able to feel what direction or orientation might be pleasing to Him. Thus, even before He asked, I tried to anticipate His Requirements and serve His Work by suggesting books that might extend His 'Consideration.' At the same time, I was always mindful not to burden Him with an unnecessary 'tonnage' of books." (Pg. 244)

Anyone wanting to know more about Adi Da, and his relationship with his devotees, will appreciate this book.

EXIBUZYW

This is a well-written book that is both moving and detailed, providing all the essentials of the Guru-devotee relationship. We often think of great Spiritual Masters and the religious traditions that formed around them in terms of teachings, rituals, and disciplines. This book makes crystal clear that, in fact, the heart of the relationship between the disciple and master has always been the reception by the disciple of a tangible, ego-dissolving Spiritual Transmission from the Master. Words alone (and even merely human charisma) could not account for fisherman walking away from their families and professions to follow a man who said only, "Come, follow me." Nor could the merely visible account for the gopi women instantly leaving their cattle to follow Krishna. No! These ordinary people were overwhelmed and utterly distracted by tangible Spiritual love. The possibility of such a genuine Spiritual Master being alive today - the primary communication of this remarkable book - is enough to make one's hair stand on end!
Sadly, the materialistic cult of our time tends not only to rob us of such opportunities, but to make taboo even the very conception of such possibilities. When the very existence of God is denied, obviously a Spiritual Master can only be interpreted as a charlatan (as suggested by the earlier, misinformed comment). . . religions can only be viewed as having merely social benefit . . . and spiritual books can only be read for new, ego-stimulating information (a kind of spiritual pornography, dismissed if not sufficiently new and stimulating), rather than as a guidebook for real practice of the Way of God Realization (not self-realization = ego-realization) that never changes.
Were Jesus to return today, He would not be crucified. He would either be ignored (unable to stand out sufficiently in the crowd of New Age "spiritual" offerings with which He would have to compete); or, He would be "nailed" by lawsuits or by character defamation as a "cult leader", triggered by His unusual behavior (e.g., forming a religion around Himself, whipping merchants in temples, having close relationships with whores, suggesting His own Divinity, instigating anti-government activities, etc.) The only thing saving the historical Jesus from this fate right now is the fact that we are a historically (and nominally) Christian culture.
May all of us who intuit the existence of the Divine, and who respect the work of the great Spiritual Masters as Agents of the Divine, actively counter all mean-spirited attempts to perpetuate the centuries-old taboo against Spiritual Masters!

Divine Distraction is very well written book by James Steinberg

about Spiritual Life in the Company of a True Spiritual Master, it is both educational and informative for those with an interest or response to this subject. The matter of Divine Distraction is not something that just happens to You, it is a response to something perhaps more profound and heart opening than you have ever experienced before. Adi Samraj is the source and object of such distraction, by reading his words and feeling James Steinbergs relationship to Adi Da Samraj it is very clear that there is something to be cherished between a spiritual master and his devotee, something also very profound which strikes at the core of our very existence. What this book reveals is the essence of such a relationship and what it is to truly recognise a true spiritual master and how to relate to such a one in the traditional manner. This book is particularly informative for the westerner in everyone, giving information that may be completely unknown or nievely mis-interpreted. I thoroughly recommend this book if you have aspirations in this field and even if you do not.

A book by a man who claims he never heard about or saw sexual abuse in his teacher's community. Not true. Moreover, in light of the present political environment, he should feel ashamed that he's an enabler of a Guru predator. The internet is rife with his teacher's sexual misconduct.
