Lunar calendar, any dating system based on a year consisting of synodic months-i. In every solar year (or year of the seasons), there are about 1. 7 synodic months. Greek astronomers also devised rules for intercalations to coordinate the lunar and solar years. It is likely that the Roman republican calendar was based on the lunar calendar of the Greeks. Lunar calendars remain in use among certain religious groups today. The Jewish calendar, which supposedly dates from 3,760 years and three months before the Christian Era (bce) is one example.

The Cosmic Calendar is a scale in which the 1. billion year lifespan of our universe is mapped onto a single year. This chronological arrangement was done by famous astronomer Carl Sagan. In this mapping, the Big Bang took place on January 1st at 12 . while the present moment is 12 . However, it might not seem like a big deal to him when he’s fifty and there is no observable different between his and his sister’s age. Similarly, wouldn’t it be easier if we had the whole history of the Universe condensed down to a more relatable time scale so that we could actually appreciate the time differences between cosmological events?

I bought this calendar expecting magnificent pictures of the moon...and it didn't disappoint me. I absolutely love pictures of anything to do with nature (and as a photography hobbyist, nature and landscape photos are my favorite pictures to take), and this calendar features many different photographs of the moon over different horizons. I particularly like the month of October (which incidentally is the month of my birthday) with a photograph of an owl perched on a tree branch with the moon directly behind the owl. This should definitely be added to your collection if you are a fan of nature photography.

This is the second year our family has purchased the lunar year calendar. It hangs in the room of my space-obsessed 5-year-old. It is enjoyable and interesting for us to monitor the moon's phases each day. The phases glow in the dark too! The photography is outstanding. Naturally, this is not a great calendar if you need to write on it, but it is great for learning and following the moon each month.
