Church history is often, but not always, studied from a Christian perspective. Reinhold Zippelius, Staat und Kirche.
Church history is often, but not always, studied from a Christian perspective. Writers from different Christian traditions will often highlight people and events particularly relevant to their own denominational history. Catholic and Orthodox writers often highlight the achievements of the ecumenical councils, while evangelical historians may focus on the Protestant Reformation and the Great Awakenings. Henry Melvill Gwatkin.
There is a LOT of information in this book, although it is reasonably easy to read given the extremely large cast of characters and the quick-moving plot and the detail of the subject . A great big picture overview of church history. Helpfully zooming in at important moments
There is a LOT of information in this book, although it is reasonably easy to read given the extremely large cast of characters and the quick-moving plot and the detail of the subject matter. Is is good for a quickish overview of the last two millennia of Christian thought, but personally I found it a bit biased in favour of the Presbyterians (the author is one) and a bit light-on for other denominations. Nevertheless, I recommend it as a brief guide to the subject. Helpfully zooming in at important moments.
by Alexander MacDonald Renwick and Allan M. Harman. I know no better sweep of the centuries which packs in all the major events in the life and times of the body of God which an evangelical Christian would be interested to know about. It really packs it in, yet does not lose readability. And knowledge of world history is not essential for understanding this book. It has an almost outrageously ambitious aim, and in my opinion it succeeds.

The book is honest in that it does not avoid dicussion of members of the church who did immoral acts or even when the church iteself was behaving poorly and in need of reform. I recommend this for catholics and protestants alike. The book takes an unsurprisingly negative tone towards the Reformation and the era of the Enlightenment. On the other hand, the split with the Eastern arm of the Church in 1438 is approached as a series of unfortunate misunderstandings compounded by certain people with political intentions. There are some sections of the book specifically referencing the growth and (then) current status of the Church in the United States.
Here is an epic tale of high hopes and great disappointments, of bitter persecution and heroic loyalty to princ. ISBN-13: 9781844740611.
