This is a small book that packs a big wallop. Sam Keen looks at the growing sense of an absent God, which haunts so many people today, and comes through with a vibrant and plausible response. He takes us back to the most elemental human emotions - gratitude, trust, wonder, joy - and demonstrates how they can become genuine bearers of the sacred. Without an ounce of naiveté, he opens a wide door for future possibilities.

Dwelling in the Presence of the Sacred. He asks: How has religion failed us?.

The answers, Keen discovers, point the way back to the primal emotions, to the life-giving sense of dwelling in the presence of the sacred. In the Absence of God sets out to recover the elemental experience of the sacred in everyday life.

In his new book, bestselling author Sam Keen challenges the notions and habits we’ve formed about religion over the centuries in order for us to build a deeper faith, that is relevant today. He asks:* How has religion failed us?.* Must we choose between dogmatic religion and atheism?* How might religion unite rather than divide us? The answers, Keen discovers, point the way back to the primal emotions, to the life-giving sense of dwelling in the presence of the sacred.. In the Absence of God sets out to recover the elemental experience of the sacred in everyday life. By appreciating emotions like wonder, gratitude, anxiety, joy, grief, reverence, compassion, outrage, hope and humility we may once again find ourselves in the presence of an unknowable but all present G-D. We may also regain the commonalities between Christians, Jews, Muslims, and other spirit traditions and end the contentious differences that have divided them and our world.

Sam Keen has once again engaged the zeitgeist of the moment and sanely, playfully, smartly explored the nature if G-d's presence and the experience of same. What a treat for the explorer as well as the well practiced.

A fairly short read that provides many thoughts to ponder. Recommended for anyone who has lost faith in organized religion but feels the secular world does not hold all the answers either. Keen is a wonderful writer and a great philosopher.

I've just begun my experience with this author. Finding a quote from him in an old book on my shelf, I ordered this book with great enthusiasm. But nothing prepared me for the beauty, the purity and the profound truth of every word I have read so far. This man understands the pain, indeed the agony of those of us who have left traditional belief systems we once passionately loved. He understands the search for meaning in this world that obsesses so many of us; he understands the loneliness from which we reach out to the Maker of the Universe in spite of our fears that there is no one to hear our prayers. I've ordered several other books by this brilliant and profoundly gifted author. Highly recommended.

Sam Keen is simply a great writer and has a broad grasp of a large variety of philosophic and religious strands that you come to feel he's like a Sherpa for your spiritual ascent. You still have to climb, but at least you can see where you are!

I am a huge Sam Keen fan, so perhaps my opinion is too biased, but I loved the book. Perhaps not his all-time best book, but still a good read.

I think Sam is still a believer - just seems to not be sure what to call "it." Reflects the views of many non-traditional Christians.

Cannot get enough of Sam Keen's writings. "Sightings" has led to me to this amazing book.
Imagine a lifetime of responding to Rilke's dictum "to live the questions" and you can appreciate the wisdom to be found in Sam Keen's latest book. It is a work to be wrestled and engaged with, not simply read and put aside.
