In the book Mystics of the Church by Evelyn Underhill, we see that no century has been without its Mystics throughout the history of the Church. Humphrey's "Mystics in the Making" is a refreshing and uplifting guidebook for achieving sanctity in a modern world. It's easy reading with a profound message: seek God in all we do. Through charming and concrete examples, Humphreys illustrates how the ordinary in our lives becomes extraordinary when given over to God's divine providence. In one chapter, she invites us to "picnic with the saints" and, in another, she uses something as simple and satisfying as a freshly baked "cookie" to explore God's sweet goodness. With a decidedly feminine perspective, Humphreys speaks to the challenges women face in our contemporary culture. She draws on the writings of Saints Therese and Teresa as well as Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta to affirm the value of answering to the higher culture of God in carrying out our responsibilities as mothers, wives and lay women of God. The narration is illuminated with quotes and stories that keep the reader engaged in her lessons on forming ourselves into modern day mystics.
