I was literally disgusted with how anticlimactic that was, Jennifer Blake builds the story up for a ridiculously passionate ending and then neither of the characters truly express the depth of the emotion they feel for eachother? "I love you" is said only once and it wasn't even a declaration but a request? Ridiculous.

While I agree (to a certain extent) with a majority of the negative reviewers, this was still a fascinating read with interesting characters, a suspenseful plot, and well-written to boot. Yes, it's descriptive and yes, the sexual encounters are lengthy (but slightly more tasteful than most). The author did use a lot of jargon for the topic sport (no biggie), as well as some really fun and archaic terms/words of the time (which I happen to appreciate and even highlighted for future reference). My only complaint (if it can be called one) is the length it took to tell this tale, especially since the pieces fell into place several chapters prior to the climactic one. I still liked it. It's been a long time since I've read anything I actually wanted to read and couldn't wait until bed time to find out what happens next. Proof of a good story, great writing, and a submersible plot. My only fear, now, is that the others in this series are going to read identical, thus spoiling it for me. I still want to read more of Jennifer Blake's work, though.

I've come to the conclusion that I like epilogues. This story could have used one. Maybe that will come as a natural part of the further adventures in the series? In any event, I would like to know what Rio and Celina are doing in a year or five. There were some episodes that were not as developed as I would have preferred--for example, what was the plan when Denys was sequestered? surely, he could not have remained hidden indefinitely, so how was Rio planning to resolve things with the count if there had been no fire. Would he have let the marriage between the count and Celina go forward--he surely let it get squeaky close. So, this was not a perfect story with all the ends tied up but it was an exciting read.

Everything was alright up until the ending. The climax with the count, the marriage contact at the end. I was literally disgusted with how anticlimactic that was, Jennifer Blake builds the story up for a ridiculously passionate ending and then neither of the characters truly express the depth of the emotion they feel for eachother? "I love you" is said only once and it wasn't even a declaration but a request? Ridiculous. It's like she just got bored with the book and decided to wrap things up. Seriously disappointed with this one.

I read the first one and after a week I had read the complete series, 6 books. A different kind of hero in each, a different setting, and each had an ax to grind with someone. Ms. Blake skillfully wove all their stories into a cohesive presentation of a time and place we don't see much of. Great history, engaging characters and of course, lots of misunderstanding and near misses! Highly recommended! Great reads for any history buff!

I thought this book was pretty good, but not quite 5 stars. I had a difficult time following some of the details of the story, the history and such was a bit confusing to me. Maybe too many, unnecessary details? I also found the ending to be a little abrupt and would like to have had a little more, even an epilogue would have been nice. There was some sex, but not brazenly detailed.

The location is New Orleans, French Quarter, mid 1800's. I loved these men and women. It was a very interesting read of what it was like for women in this location and time period. A few chapters in, I realized that the pace of the book is very much like my favorite dance, the Tango. The author is a wonderful writer and I am reading more.
Boring, boring, boring. Pages and pages of descriptions of the settings, and of thoughts they were having. NOT ENOUGH DIALOGUE! I got bored and moved on to another book, because I didn't care what happened to the characters.
