This a very good book for mathematical statistics. I purchased it from amazon at a reasonable price, the packaging was too good..I got it perfect shape and have been using it ever since!

I read it cover to cover. Hands down the best introduction to statistical inference for the mathematically inclined. Lucid, rigorous - well, as rigorous as you can get without availing of measure theory - and with many examples, it covers the standard topics for a first course. Unlike probability textbooks, good statistics textbooks are hard to come by. This one stands out from the crowd. India has a venerable tradition of excellency and innovation in the field of probability & statistics going back to Rao and Bahadur and this son of hers (though now residing in the States) has fallen close to the tree. One point to note, though, is that the book does not cover multivariate distributions.

I have recently begun reading this book alongside the assigned text (Hogg, Mckean, Craig) for an intro to statistical theory course.

Both are terrific texts but this book really shines with its nonmathematical touches. In most chapters, Nitis romances the topic with a bit of history, examples, and enthusiasm. Such warm up is absent from other texts resulting in a mechanical and disappointingly unsatisfying experience. By putting students in the "mood" the Nitis text ensures that students will come back for more.

After having bought Freund's mathematical statistics this is a godsend, its full of proofs and he shows many results on this basis alone the book is worth the purchase. for practicing questions you will have to look elsewhere though... :(
