Stewart's CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, Fifth Edition, Volume One has the mathematical precision, accuracy, clarity of exposition and outstanding examples and problem sets that have characterized the first four editions. In this Fifth Edition, Stewart retains the focus on problem solving and the pedagogical system that has worked so well for students in a wide variety of colleges and universities throughout the world. He has made refinements to the exposition and examples to ensure that students have the best materials available. Further support for students and instructors is now available through a vast array of supplementary material. This new one-term version of the text provides more options for choosing a text to fit the course needs, along with the flexibility to select the resources that you want with the text.

This review is for the HYBRID edition, which is not the full book, leaving out some critical content that is included with the other 7th edition versions ("Calculus" and "Single Variable Calculus") by the same author. The differences are not mentioned anywhere in the Amazon product description, which appears to reference "Calculus," regardless of which of the 3 versions is selected for viewing. Additionally, the content shown when you click "Look Inside" is NOT from the Hybrid edition, which is not the same.

While the other versions of the book apparently have all required course content for a Calculus class, the Hybrid edition leaves out the end-of-section exercises normally assigned as homework (or for self-review). In the Hybrid edition, the missing end-of-section exercises are available on the publisher's "WebAssign" website, and access must be separately purchased for a minimum of $75.00. So by itself, the Hybrid edition won't be sufficient for a Calculus class unless it was specifically assigned by your instructor.

This is a relatively good book on calculus.

However, this book does not explain the "why"s of calculus very well. I guess if you
are into rote problem solving without clear foundation, is is good book for you.

This textbook is 1200 pages. How many pages will be actually covered in one semester using this book?
The content is relatively well written (they had 8 revision so far to get it right). The amount of examples
is relatively large comparable to other similar text books.

My pet gripe in the textbook industry in the arrival of new editions every year or two. This book is no exception.
The difference between this version and version 8 a so slight, it begs the question "how do you justify a new +200$ text book"?
Another gripe. is that there are so many variations on similar topics, early trancedental, calculus on single variable, on multiple variables, etc.
If you cannot get at least that in a single volume 1200 page text book, then there might be other motive for all these different
versions.

I know, you have no choice is your school select this book to use in class.

I have purchased this textbook last year for my class. Unfortunately, I was not able to take the course until this summer. The book is wonderful in terms of material and mathematical knowledge that it gives and techniques that it teaches. One can practically use this book to learn everything an undergraduate mathematics student needs to know. It is that good! James Stewart, the author of the book, gives the best way to learn Calculus with introduction to material in each chapter with examples and problems in between paragraphs. This is perhaps the best way to self-teach yourself the mathematics required for college and prepare for each class, and that is exactly how this textbook helped me before I started the summer course.

This edition (with Enhanced WebAssign 2007/2008) is exactly page-for-page the same as Stewart's 6e "Single Variable Calculus Early Transcendentals (2003/2008)" except: 1) this reprint starts from page 1 of the original, so it does not include the Preface, "To The Student" and the Diagnostic Tests, and it does not have the nice detailed Table of Contents with page numbers and titles for each section (instead it has a one page TOC with the title of each chapter and their page numbers), but this reprint does include the Reference Pages cutout sheets 2) For reasons that are not clear, Appendix F includes 2 pages from the multivariable book on the proof of Clairaut's Theorem (for sections 14.3, 14.4), and 3) the index is taken from the complete single volume index, so it includes references to pages that are not in this book (from Chapters 12-17 which are part of the multivariable book).
Some of my students find the Diagnostic Tests to be very useful, and the extraneous references in the index can be annoying. I like having the detailed Table of Contents from the original version. Besides those annoyances, this is a great inexpensive printing of Stewart's 6e.

For 50 cents more you can get what this book has plus 6 more chapters that will get you through Calc III, ISBN 9780538497879. The covers of each book look identical. I thought I was buying the 3 semester text which makes the $200 price pretty decent, but now I find my text won't even get me through Calc II. The companion textbook I had to buy duplicates chapters 10 and 11 from this text, so I don't even get the full benefit of a lighter textbook. If you like throwing away money, buy this book!

I've always wanted to learn calculus. Sad, isn't it.
Anyway, since no one will let you audit classes any more I decided to teach myself. The problem is that not just any book will do when teaching yourself mathematics and I was about to give up when I came onto this one.
Most textbooks are just an aid for a teacher to use. This book embodies the teacher that wrote it.
In other words, most books have the material that you should learn in them but are missing the bits and pieces that explain how to get from point A to point B. In some cases the understanding requires only a bit of text but without it the student is left to guess and we all know where that gets you.
I can make it even simpler. I am not a wiz kid. Sometimes you need to draw me a picture. If I can learn calculus from this book then I think that just about any one can learn calculus from this book. I can't make it any simpler than that!
DEAD-SHOT
It's okay as reference. I prefer the MIT opensource book that's free over this though.

As with many math books, it's just so confusing when they try to explain it to you and you end up having to go forward and backward through the chapter picking up what they are talking about. By the time you are studying for the test you should know enough for the book to make sense, but it's a struggle to get there.

This is for people who need a cheap reference, are forced to get it for class, or like to decode themselves. I would go elsewhere for self teaching.
