Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet (1805–59) may be considered the father of modern number theory. The material was first published in 1863 by Richard Dedekind (1831–1916), professor at Braunschweig, who had been a junior colleague of Dirichlet at Göttingen.

Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet (1805–59) may be considered the father of modern number theory. He studied in Paris, coming under the influence of mathematicians like Fourier and Legendre, and then taught at Berlin and Göttingen universities, where he was the successor to Gauss. The appendices contain further work by both Dirichlet and Dedekind.

I have omitted the very lengthy Supplements X and XI, where Dedekind launches into ideal theory, because Dedekind wrote a more compact version of his main results which has already been translated (Dedekind (1996)), and also because they have a more abstract flavour than the rest of the book, which Dirichlet was at pains to make as concrete as possible.

Vorlesungen über Zahlentheorie (German for Lectures on Number Theory) is the name of several different textbooks of number theory. The best known was written by Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet and Richard Dedekind, and published in 1863. Others were written by Leopold Kronecker, Edmund Landau, and Helmut Hasse. They all cover elementary number theory, Dirichlet's theorem, quadratic fields and forms, and sometimes more advanced topics.

Johann Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet (German: ; 13 February 1805 – 5 May 1859) was a German mathematician who made deep contributions to number theory.

The simplifications introduced in the Vorlesungen with respect to the Disquisitiones are manifold and operate at several levels.
