This is the first part of a two volume treatment of solid state physics.

Solid State Theory (Dover Books on Physics). This is the first part of a two volume treatment of solid state physics. The presentation is very clear and to the point as the authors does not shy away from introducing right mathematical tools with tasteful introduction whenever needed. For instance it is the only book of this sort(to my knowledge) which discusses the classification of the critical points of electronic density of states in the context of Morse theory(The pertinent parts obviously).

Theoretical Solid State Physics, Volume 1: Perfect Lattices in Equilibrium (Dover Books on Physics). I am a Chinese theoretical chemical-physicist and I found this book far better than any other solid-state textbook in Chinese, even though it was written some 40 years ago. It gave a very systematic, general to example approach to solid state problems.

Students will especially appreciate the wealth of useful problems included in both volumes, along with numerous explanatory diagrams and helpful appendixes. 0486650162 (ISBN13: 9780486650166).

Norman H. March and William Jones. Concisely written and well-organized, the two volumes are concerned with quite different aspects of the subjects. Volume I deals with the fundamental theory of the equilibrium properties of perfect crystalline solids.
