My 5yo and 9yo were crushed by the loss of our golden retriever last week, and I struggled with words myself. So when I looked for how to handle this delicate moment, I turned to a man I've come to trust more as a parent than I ever dreamed I would as a child watching him on tv: Fred Rogers.

When a Pet Dies simply and deftly acknowledges the pain and loss we feel, while talking about the good times. It states simply that we don't know what happens after death, but we do know that the pet lives on in the love in our hearts.

If you're looking for a book to help, one that you can trust not to have to do parental damage-control behind, this is it. In this difficult time for our family, Fred Rogers was my best partner in parenting.

Our dog recently passed and I turned to kids books to help explain the process and feelings appropriately to our children (ages 5 and almost 3). This book was very simple, yet thorough in that it covered all scenarios with every aspect of the death of a pet. I am very grateful for this book for helping me (in my own stages of grief) help my children work through their grief.

I bought this book in preparation for the passing of our 18 year old cat whom my 3 year old daughter adored. The day our cat passed away, we sat our daughter down and tried to explain what had happened. Then we read this book. It did a great job of explaining death in a very basic way that small children could understand. It sticks to the basics with no mention of an afterlife so if you're looking for something more spiritual this isn't that book, but I found it very helpful in explaining exactly what happened and why our beloved pet wouldn't be with us any longer. Thank you Mr. Rogers. You continue to help children (and parents) everywhere.

This is a gentle way to help children understand loss. We bought it when our older dog was diagnosed with cancer so that the kids would understand what will happen soon. The pictures are old but the ideas are completely relevant and it is so well written.

Touches nicely upon death and grief and feelings. Dated photographs made me smile, and I think are better than illustrations, because we can associate our journey (ie being at a vet's office) with the story. Could be a little more explicit by using words such as cancer or chemotherapy or trauma, but I understand why Mr. Rogers keeps it simple for the littlest of kids.

Our beloved dog who my 4 year old knew since birth had passed away. We all grieved his loss. My son had a lot of questions and while I did the best I could to answer them, I was just as emotional and had a hard time, too. I was so grateful to find that Mr. Rogers had a whole series of books on all different subjects. I blubbered through reading it by myself first, and then read it to him. It really helped. Thank you, Mr. Rogers!

We have a younger dog with chronic kidney disease, and it's a matter of time, folks. I bought this book to have on hand for when "it" happens. This book is sensitive and sweet. It tells the kids that it's ok to feel sad when you lose a pet, and I feel better having it around. I was really worried not only about dealing with my own grief when we lose our dog, but how to help my kids deal with theirs, and I think this book will help. Mr. Rogers still rocks, hands down!
This book was great, though I wish I would have taken a slightly different approach to talking to our daughter (almost 4) at the time of our dog's passing. I wish I would have let her guide the conversation more with her questions instead of me reading this book right off the bat. It talks about funerals which I kind of skipped over since we were cremating our dog and I didn't want to open that door and discussion at her age. It is a very straight forward book.
