With exemplary clarity, John Scott expertly guides us through key modern theorizations of social system and social action. Not only is Scott's assessment of recent attempts to synthesise these two dimensions of sociology's core dualism very useful for students and teachers of sociology, it represents a valuable theoretical contribution in its own right. Documented, insightful, informed and informative, Sociological Theory continues to be a highly recommended and core addition to academic library contemporary sociology reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Theoretical sociology is not easy to understand. You have to read originals and interpretations. This book is a good interpretation of ideas from the second half of the 20th century.

This is a textbook, but a more personal textbook that say Turner's books. This makes the current book more readable. With personal I mean that the selection of material is more streamlined to fit the author's perspective. The author doesn't try to force you into his way of thinking, but he also selects what he wants to discuss.

If you're in the market for a book on theoretical sociology I can recommend this book as well as Randall Collins's "Theoretical Sociology". If you are not looking for this specific topic, stay away!

Very good book, the chapter on "Interpretation, Structuration and Rules" (ch.9) is really exceptional. I'm a postgrad sociologist - I find myself going back to this book, often.

I owe thanks to Scott for giving me a decent account of Parsons without dogma - I find myself now thinking that Parsons was incredibly, unjustly, maligned by generations of sociologists who (like me) hadn't actually ever read him.
