Foggy Mountain Breakdown, the first-ever collection of Sharyn McCrumb's short fiction, is a literary quilting . Here, in Foggy Mountain Breakdown and other stories, McCrumb continues to deftly draw characters and their settings.

Foggy Mountain Breakdown, the first-ever collection of Sharyn McCrumb's short fiction, is a literary quilting of old and new, humorous and heartfelt, offering award-winning works-and two stories never before published, contrasting mountain childhoods past and present. Chilling tales of suspense alternate with evocative character portraits and compelling narratives that embrace the southern Appalachian locales and themes of McCrumb's acclaimed Ballad Novels. She establishes motivations that fit the characters like a glove.

It says on the book jacket that you live in the Atlanta area, but that’s a big place, so I figured this was the best way to make sure that . Since finding that book, I have been looking for the rest of the Cass Cairncross detective series.

It says on the book jacket that you live in the Atlanta area, but that’s a big place, so I figured this was the best way to make sure that you got my letter k Bullet Proof, and I had to write and tell you how much I enjoyed it. In hardcover yet, which is something I don’t do for many authors.

Finally the stories stopped altogether. Alva Pierce had never been found. She took her dinner, and set the other one down in front of her late husband’s empty chair. There was a large boulder near the bones, and I think it must have fallen, either killing the person, or pinning them down so that they could not escape. Then she said, Young man, I thought children were not allowed in Northfield except at visiting hours. Yes, ma’am, I said, but I work here.

This book is a collection of almost all the short stories I have ever written

This book is a collection of almost all the short stories I have ever written. Some of them are serious character studies ( A Predatory Woman, Among My Souvenirs, The Matchmaker ); some are sad stories set in the Southern mountains ( Precious Jewel, Telling the Bees, Old Rattler ); and some are whimsical tales of fantasy and humor ( An Autumn Migration, Remains to Be Seen, Nine Lives to Live ). Compare the sunny life of that suburban child to the dark, spartan boyhood described in Foggy Mountain Breakdown, which is a portrait of my father’s youth in the Tennessee mountains. Sometimes when I write short stories I set myself a task. Within this cornucopia of two dozen stories, Old Rattler, a mountain healer, skirmishes with a serial killer.

In an earlier life, McCrumb must have been a balladeer, singing of restless spirits, star-crossed lovers, and the consoling beauty of nature. The overall effect is spellbinding.

A collection of suspense and mystery stories evokes the southern Appalachian region

I have a friend, Amanda, who is, as she says, "a gen-u-wine hillbilly" from east Tennessee, where my mother's family also has roots. Amanda introduced me to Sharyn McCrumb's stories while we were both active in science-fiction fandom. The book was Zombies of the Gene Pool, a murder mystery set at a science-fiction convention. McCrumb's deftness in drawing characters had me rolling on the floor, as I knew or knew of s-f fans exactly like the ones she was describing in the book. Amanda also recommended If I'd Killed Him when I Met Him, and I enjoyed that, too. Here, in Foggy Mountain Breakdown and other stories, McCrumb continues to deftly draw characters and their settings. She establishes motivations that fit the characters like a glove. I have visited the Appalachians and the Blue Ridge many times, and she has it down pat. My favorite in this collection is "Happiness is a Dead Poet," as I hang with writers of both non-fiction and fiction, and again McCrumb has hit the mark on characterization. Her prose is clear and compelling, and her plotting brings the reader into the story and keeps her (or him) there. If you enjoy short fiction, if you like a good story, and especially if you have any mountain connections, you can't miss with McCrumb.

I met Sharyn McCrumb in the late 1990's while participating in the Appalachian Writer's Workshop. I quickly became a dedicated fan of her unique writing style and, often macabre, sense of humor. She is the only author whose books entice me to re-read. This is my second reading of Foggy Mountain Breakdown and it's still fascinating. If you are a fan of mysteries be sure to also read my favorite McCrumb novel, "If I'd Killed Him When I Met Him". Sharyn's sheer story-spinning genius shines through in all her books.

Nobody writes about Appalachia like Sharyn McCrumb. Some of the most breath-taking descriptive lines in literature reside in this book.

I have everything I can find by Sharyn McCrumb. Always a great read.

I really enjoyed McCrumb's earlier books. I am not a fan of NASCAR, but the story line was sufficient, however, these stories in Foggy Mountain, are boring and seem to be random ideas. I really did not like the writing style and abrupt endings or ending that left you hanging. I will not buy any more books by McCrumb.
Realistic
Sharon McCrumb as usual has written about the mountain people who she seems to know well. She makes them so real and helps one to understand them and their way of life. A good writer and I love the way she titles her books.

I liked how there were many stories in this book. They were short but you wanted to read more.
I enjoyed all of the stories in this book. Sharyn McCrumb is one of my favorite authors. I can recommend this book.
