Equal parts amateur sleuth whodunit and understated contemporary romance, the first installment of Michele Scott's Horse Lover's Mystery saga is a fast-paced murder mystery that revolves around Michaela Bancroft, a 32-year-old horse trainer whose personal life is quickly coming apart at the seams. Struggling through an ugly divorce and in danger of losing her southern California ranch to creditors, Bancroft finds her already chaotic life turned upside down when her beloved uncle Lou is found murdered in a stable stall, impaled by a pitchfork. The distraught Bancroft vows to find the person or people behind the senseless homicide, but the deeper she digs into her uncle's secretive past (an ill-managed business venture involving an artificial insemination breeding program, rumors of infidelity, mysterious payoffs, etc.), the more potential suspects come to the forefront. Even Bancroft's closest friends --- trusted veterinarian Ethan Slater and her fun-loving roommate, Camden -- become prime suspects. Ignoring the advice of hunky detective Jude Davis, Bancroft continues snooping around and soon finds herself the killer's next target…. Scott's genre-blending Saddled with Trouble will appeal to mystery and romance fans alike. Her newest could easily be categorized as a romantic suspense à la Linda Howard or Nora Roberts.

In Michele Scott's Saddled With Trouble, the first installment in the Horse Lover's Thriller Mystery series, you'll be welcomed to the grand world of horse racing. For Michaela Bancroft, she had enough trouble as it is, with her ex-husband's new girlfriend forcing her to sign the divorce papers, while overwhelmed in debt, and then finding her uncle murdered in his own horse stall. While she was shocked with his death, she had met Detective Jude Davis on the case, trying to find answers on her own. She had become suspicious of her best friend's boyfriend's behavior and her own troubled feelings for Dr. Ethan Slater, her friend and vet. When she discovered that one of her ranch hands had been murdered with his own suicide note, it made her worrisome and suspicious of the people she had known on the ranch. She also suspected some strange goings over her ranch and the breeding scam that had placed the blame on her uncle. While Jude questioned her and her step-aunt Cynthia, she had to deal with her father's gambling problems again. As soon as she figured out who wanted her uncle Lou dead, someone almost ran her off the road. Then on the way to Vegas for a rodeo show, she became face to face with a killer who wanted her dead too with a shocking ending.
I enjoyed this book. I liked how the characters were developed and how the story flowed smoothly. In the beginning, the author described a couple of things, such as what "bay" means in regards to a horse color and most of the other horse-related parts of the story were easy to follow if you weren't a horse person. I, however, am so I noticed a couple of inconsitencies. The biggest being when Mickaela was training Rocky and said she trained him to turn on his haunches by coming to a sliding stop out of a full run. That isn't how you train a horse to spin. The reining events I've seen, the horse comes to a sliding stop then rights itself a little before going into a spin. It would be very akward for a horse to spin while still in the sliding stop position. Continuity was another problem. When the detective went to Mickaela's farm to talk to her, she'd been riding her horse Rocky. At some point, it said Mickaela had shifted from one foot to the other, which would indicate she had dismounted even though there was no mention of her having done so. On the next page it referenced her being in the saddle and then a few lines later she was mounting her horse with no mention of her having dismounted. The word "Your" was used incorrectly as "you're" and finally, if Sam kept up his conversation for about half the trip, they would not have been close enough to Las Vegas for a Metro helicopter to have shown up. Halfway between Indio and Las Vegas is too far outside Metro's jurisdiction and likely it would've been the highway patrol who responded, no matter who knew whom. Metro just isn't going to fly that far to help someone.

Regardless, I enjoyed the story and look forward to reading the next 2 books.
A very likeable story involving Michaela Bancroft , who trains horses on a ranch with her uncle and her father. Michaela's hubby is dumping her for a young chick he had an affair with and is running away. And then wouldn't you know, her uncle gets murdered. And she is dragged in. Michaela must use all her smarts as she gets pulled into the murder case, She has to outwit some dimwit cops. She does get help from Jude who falling for her and her for him..

There are many great twists and plot moves that keep the story popping. As Michaela tries to find the killer of her uncle she keeps getting in deeper trouble. She does become a darn good sleuth!

There is one thing missing from this book and that is editing. I was put off many times by spelling, plurals, and poor sentence control. Had it not been these items, I would have rated the 5 stars.
The equestrian world comes alive in Saddled With Trouble, an enjoyable light read full of red herrings and fun. I have horses so this appealed to me and while the characters are all adult, I think young girls who love horses will have an especially good time with this book.

Our heroine, already dealing with her unpleasant divorce, is hit hard by the death of her favorite uncle. When it comes to light that he was murdered, Michaela goes on a quest to find the truth. She's an amateur sleuth but gets some help (and romantic attentions) from the detective on the case.

So there's a little romance thrown in, along with the mystery, danger and suspense. Scott gives us enough suspects that the reader is guessing who-dun-it to the very end. Saddled With Trouble is a fun light read, and those who enjoy a look into the world of horses will appreciate it even more!
Tangled relationships, lots of questions. Looking forward to #2 and hope there are more to come.
Adult characters a change from Michele ' s Fairmont Academy series, which I also enjoyed.
