Portrait in Death After a tip from a reporter, Eve Dallas finds the body of a young woman in a Delancey Street dumpster. I prefer listening to this series as Susan Ericksen brings each persona to life giving them their own voice. I do love hearing that Scottish accent she uses and the New Yorker attitudes. The romance between characters is often comical, but there are moments that are intense and emotionally capturing giving depth to their love and commitments.

After a tip from a reporter, Eve Dallas finds the body of a young woman in a Delancey Street dumpster. Just hours before, the news station had mysteriously received a portfolio of professional portraits of the woman. The photos seemed to be nothing out of the ordinary for any pretty young woman starting a modeling career. Except that she wasn't a model. And that these photos were taken after she had been murdered. Now Dallas is on the trail of a killer who's a perfectionist and an artist. He carefully observes and records his victim's every move. And he has a mission: to own every beautiful young woman's innocence, to capture her youth and vitality - in one fateful shot...
Another excellent installment in this series. One of the things that has so amazed and impressed me about it is Nora Roberts' ability to introduce a new element into the relationship of Eve and Roarke. Most authors tend to delay marriage between the MCs to prolong that tension between them. Ms. Roberts manages to do that in every book even though they are now an "old married couple."

In this one, Roarke runs across a woman who knew his mother - his REAL mother, not the woman he remembered that he always assumed was his mom. This really messes him up and he does not handle it well. AT. ALL. He withdraws from Eve, is generally cold and nasty to her, and takes off for Ireland without telling her anything other than he was leaving.

And to top it off, Summerset is out of commission, having tripped over Galahad while going down the stairs and broken his leg. And on the day he had planned to leave on vacation! Eve was SOOOO disappointed!

For once, though, Eve actually is civil to Summerset - she shares her concern over Roarke with him. And she actually leaves New York in the middle of a case to go be with Roarke in Ireland. His attitude really shook her!

It was great to see the roles reversed with Roarke vulnerable and prickly for once and Eve really steps up to the occasion. She acts downright wifely!

All the usual players are there, although they, and even the case, take a back seat to Roarke's issues.

(Roarke) “You’re certainly chipper this morning.”
(Eve) "Damn straight. Chipper’s my middle name. I’m going out to spread joy and laughter to all of mankind.”
Portrait in Death is #16 in the In Death series by J. D. Robb. As usual for this series I found it very good.

I loved the continued play between Eve and Summerset. Eve is feeling great because she is going to have a little peace because Summerset is going on holiday. Well he was until he has a set back. As much as they like to stir each other up, they show their united front when it comes to caring for Roarke. Plus Eve also shows she has an understanding side when it comes to Summerset.
A large portion of this book is about Roarke. He receives some information from someone he meets at the health centre he contributes to. This woman gives him some information that totally skittles him and also leads to a skirmish with Eve. After this skirmish its good to see how Eve goes about learning what a wife might/should do in her situation.
I admit to reaching for the tissues when Roarke visits Ireland. If you've read the book I think you'll know, if not I won't spoil it.
Oh, of course there are murders that Eve and her team are tracking down, as usual creepy and very strange. It takes them awhile to solve and they almost lose one of their team in the process and some get a little weepy over that. All I can say is thank goodness - because I expect to see heaps of development for this character as I read on in the series.
Long live Eve, Roarke, Peabody, McNabb, Somerset and so many more!
4.5 stars!

After basically years of seeing this series around and reading about this mystical Roarke, I gave in and decided to read the In Death Books. It was quite an undertaking, since when I started there were 33 books already released in the series, not counting short stories and novellas. Besides that, deciding to read this series was a big commitment in two fronts. One, I simply had to by 33 books and secondly, I would not be reading anything else until I was done. That's how psychotic I can be when it comes to book series.

December 2011 was when my journey began and by February 2012 I was done and now there is NO turning back. I am IN LOVE with this series! I not only obviously love Roarke, but I love Eve and all the secondary characters that make up this great story as well.

Yes, I have become irritated with Eve at times, but I adored being able to see her grow throughout the series. It has been quite a ride, but one I will never regret hopping aboard.

This series is a great mix of mystery, police drama and romance. I love every aspect of it, from the near futuristic setting, to the way J.D. Robb writes her prose. If there is one thing that bothers me, is that considering the series has 35 books published, the span of time that has passed is very short and I wish the lapse between books was a bit longer. But if you read the books throughout a longer period of time, it won't really matter, but reading them so close together made me wish for that longer lapse.

Eve is such a complex character. All that she has been through has made who she is, but her story is not less heartbreaking because of it. For that matter, so is Roarke's and the fact that these two found each other is nothing less than serendipity. They need each other and I am sure they would never have grown to be who they are in the series by book 35, if not for each other's presence in their lives. Not to mention the "family" they have built with their dear friends.

One of the biggest issues brought up in this series by J.D. Robb, is the Nature Vs. Nurture debate. I love it! It always makes me think and it is very satisfying to see these people that could have become something very wrong, rise above nature and blood, to become amazing people.

On the crime fighting aspect of the series, I find that Robb uses two types of narrative. Sometimes she carries more of a "Monk" style, where the perpetrator is clear if not early on, but soon. The other one is where we get a punch in the face when we finally find out out who it is. I really enjoy that she doesn't have only one style, since that always keeps me guessing =D

I LOVE this series and if you have yet to check it out, please do so! The first few books might not compel you completely, but keep reading! You won't regret it!
Another good story, but different. Eve was more the wife and caretaker in this story and Roarke had to deal with his past, with Eve's help. It was shocking but in a good way because the truth came out and it helped to heal a lot of wounds.

To find out who the killer was was shocking and what he was doing and why. My heart was in my throat there at the end if they could be or would be able to save one of their own from this killer.

But when Eve went to the morgue with a friend to help him through a horrible time, it left you breathless and touched to see this softer side of Eve. In all actuality, the story and everything worked in this book
