Elmore John Leonard Jr. His earliest novels, published in the 1950s, were Westerns, but he went on to specialize in crime fiction and suspense thrillers, many of which have been adapted into motion pictures. LaBrava, the 1983 novel by author Elmore Leonard, follows the story of Joe LaBrava, former Secret Service agent. This novel won the 1984 Edgar Award for Best Novel. Classic Leonard. Elmore has the knack of creating characters that jump right off the page. This is a 1950's style noir novel, with a 50's movie actress who stared in noir films as the centerpiece. LaBrava and Maurice are a little close to characters of Leonard's that I have appeared in other books, but that's okay. he gives them a unique flair. The bad guys are amusing and sinister, the heroine is sexy but dangerous, and the good girl is a bit seedy but manages to seem chaste despite the fact she's not. Never say that Leonard's characters aren't multifaceted!

The plot is so well done that I never saw the real angle of the crime until I was hit in the head with it. Well worth a read!
An intriguing tale of the ambiguity of love. Staged on Miami Beach before the beautiful people moved there and the fabulous Art Deco Hotels were crumbling retirement homes for aging snowbirds. This tale of manipulation, betrayal, obsession, and convenience all in the name of love touches all of the human quirks and frailties Elmore Leonard captures so well.

Everyone has an angle, agenda, and undeniable need, to be satiated at any cost. Miami Beach itself becomes a metaphor for the nature of survival and reinvention, what we lose and what we value, all in the quest for security and a facade of respectability.
If it walks like james M. Cain and it tastes like James M. Cain, then it must be Elmore Leonard. After reading the ten or twelve most recent Leonard novels and short story collections as they were published and thoroughly enjoying them, it became time to try some of his earlier work. LaBrava was the first, published more than twenty years ago. I was floored by the atmosphere of South Beach in the early eighties, so reminiscent of James M. Cain's noir novels like The Postman Always Rings Twice, Butterfly, and Serenade, published in the 1940s, with their elaborate, devious plot twists, photographic detail, and brilliant flawed characters. To those qualities Leonard adds his ear for dialogue. The plot revolves around ex secret service agent turned photographer Joe LaBrava, his fairly elderly former bookie friend turned hotel operator, and a slightly faded starlet. 'Nuff said. It's perhaps Leonard's best.
Being a fan of Justified on TV I decided to give one of Elmore Leonard's books a try. Wasn't sure in the first couple chapters I was going to like this book, but before long I was sucked in and hooked A real page turner that gives you a peek at the dark side of Miami. A retired movie actress , a shady private cop, a wealthy hotel owner, and LaBrava who is former Secret Service agent are the main players in this story. Kidnapping extortion, and murder all add up to big trouble for LaBrava who is out to put an end to it. Hang on for the ride!
Nicely written mystery set in Miami, a little slow getting started, but the pace soon picked up and kept the interest going throughout the story.
Clever and witty, Labrava, an ex-detective turned photographer, keeps the story moving with several twists in the plot.
Anyone living in or visiting Miami would love the book, and any photographer would find the camera information fun. The closer it gets to the end of the story, the more you want to read. Would be interested in more Elmore Leonard stories.
Another accomplished read from Leonard not a word wasted fast-moving tale with a host of well-realised characters, Jean, the former Hollywood actress, is particularly well-done. I particularly liked the Miami South Beach setting.
Top notch. Joe LaBrava is someone you'd like to hang out with. This is a funny story with lots of twists and turns and of course filled with wonderful dialog that only Mr. Leonard could write.
The story centres around a young photographer meeting a film star, some years his senior, who was reasonably famous as the bad woman in film noirs of the 40's and 50's. I found it interesting as it refers to some famous titles, stars and story lines of this genre. There is the usual intersection of low life not very successful criminals out to scam those with money and the aging film star has money problems of her she tries to solve by reusing a plot and dialogue from one of her old crime movies. It has the usual Leonard attractions in the dialogue and the no frills prose style. But the pacing is rather slow and the resolution somewhat predictable.
